Canoe Kayak Canada – Second Gold Medal and New Official World Best Time for Laurence Vincent-Lapointe
SZEGED, HUNGARY (May 20, 2018) – Canadian Women’s Canoe athlete, Laurence Vincent-Lapointe (Trois-Rivières, QC), won a second gold medal on Sunday and set a new official world best time in the C1 200 meter-event at the ICF Sprint World Cup in Szeged, Hungary.
Vincent-Lapointe finished the race with a new record of 44.502 seconds. Her C2 partner Katie Vincent (Mississauga, ON) wasn’t too far behind as she placed third in a time of 45.737 seconds. Silver went to Russia’s Olesia Romasenko with a time of 45.660 seconds
“This is really exciting for our sport, but also for all Canadians,” explained Anders Gustafsson, Head Coach of the Canadian sprint team. “For the second time at a World Cup event, these two ladies managed to stand on the podium together both in C1 and C2. Katie is still a U23 athlete, so this is very promising for the coming years.”
Anna Roy-Cyr (Québec) also had a great performance Sunday as she placed 6th in the Women’s C1 500-meter final. The Canadian Women’s canoe team qualified for a total of 8 finals winning two golds and one bronze.
Both Canadian Women’s and Men’s K4 crews reached the finals on Sunday. Ryan Cochrane (Nova Scotia), Mark De Jonge (Nova Scotia), Pierre-Luc Poulin (Québec) and Nicholas Matveev (Ontario) placed 7th in a time of 1:20.3 seconds. On the women’s side, Michelle Russel (Nova Scotia), Lissa Bissonnette (Québec), Courtney Stott (Ontario) and Madeline Schmidt (Ontario) placed 9th in a time of 1:35.3 seconds.
The first ICF Paracanoe and Canoe Sprint World Cup is now completed, and the action will start again on Friday, May 25 for the second World Cup in Duisburg, Germany.
