Tennis Canada – Peliwo, Krainik and Gervais fall in the first round

Sherbrooke, March 7, 2017 – Three of the six Canadians in action on Tuesday advanced to the second round at the Subaru Sherbrooke Futures presented by Énergie 106.1. Sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), the tournament, which offers $25, 000 U.S. in total prize money, will be held from March 4-12, 2017 at the Christian Bourque indoor tennis courts of the Rock Forest Recreation Centre in Sherbrooke.

In the biggest upset of the day, Brayden Schnur (Pickering, ON) ousted the tournament’s sixth seed, Daniel Altmaier of Germany. Despite his opponent tallying fives aces and only two double faults, the Canadian was able to convert on his chances, particularly in the first set. Schnur was broken early in the second set, but managed to break back and hold serve to take back control of the match. In a contest that lasted over an hour and a half, the Canadian defeated his opponent by a score of 6-3, 7-6(3).

Philip Bester (Vancouver, BC) and Pavel Krainik (Toronto, ON) faced off in an all-Canadian matchup, which saw the experienced Bester defeat the young wildcard recipient Krainik 6-3, 6-2. The young Washi Gervais was the third Canadian player to lose in the first round, falling to the American Qualifier Ryan Shane in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.

Felix Auger-Aliassime (Montreal, QC) was also in action, playing a first-round doubles match with French partner Gleb Sakharov against the finalists of the 2017 Gatineau Futures, Gregoire Barrere and Laurent Lokoli of France. The pair of Auger-Aliassime and Sakharov fell to the French duo, losing 6-4, 6-3. Felix will be in action on Wednesday, taking on the American Nathaniel Lammons.

On Wednesday, Denis Shapovalov (Richmond Hill, ON) will headline the evening session at 6 p.m. He was eliminated in the first round of last year’s tournament and will be looking to build off of his impressive victory last week at the Gatineau Futures.

The Subaru Sherbrooke Futures presented by Énergie 106.1 is the second in a series of three tournaments that will be played in Quebec during the months of February and March. The event will be followed by the Drummondville National Bank Challenger.
