Volleyball Canada – June 18, 2016: Canada’s Ben Saxton and Chaim Schalk, who have already secured an Olympic berth, finished fifth today at the Olsztyn Grand Slam in Poland.

Brazil’s top men’s pair – Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt – defeated Saxton and Schalk today 2-0 (21-19, 21-16) to advance.

“It was a good week for us here in Poland,” said Schalk, of Red Deer. AB. “We played steady, consistent ball throughout and are happy with the fifth. We are looking forward to a week off then preparing for the Major series in Croatia.”

Grant O’Gorman (Scarborough, ON) and Sam Pedlow (Barrie, ON) also had a solid performance in Poland, winning their pool, but falling to Guto/Saymon of Brazil in the playoffs.  Pedlow and O’Gorman will compete in the Continental Cup finals next week with the goal of securing another Olympic berth for Canada.

On the women’s side, Sarah Pavan (Kitchener, ON) and Heather Bansley (Waterdown, ON) won their pool, but fell to a Slovakian duo in the playoffs.  Melissa Humana-Paredes (Toronto) and Taylor Pischke (Winnipeg, MB) also finished ranked ninth in an impressive showing for this pair.
