Canadian Lacrosse Association – CALGARY, AB – The Coquitlam Adanacs earned a 3-1 series win over the Brampton Excelsiors to capture the 2018 Minto Cup this past weekend in Calgary, Alberta. They used a 10-8 overtime victory in Game 4 to eliminate Brampton and win their second Canadian Junior A national championship in three years.

Adanacs’ goaltender Christian Del Bianco was stellar between the pipes, finishing the tournament with a 6-2 record and an impressive 7.43 goals against average and .823 save percentage. He capped off his stellar junior career with his second Minto Cup title and a pair of individual awards, taking home the Jim McConaghy Memorial Award as the tournament’s most valuable player and the Jim Bishop Award for leadership, sportsmanship and outstanding play.

Del Bianco became only the second player in Minto Cup history to capture both awards in the same year, joining Brendan Bomberry of the Six Nations Arrows who accomplished the feat in 2015. It was the second time the Calgary Roughneck’s netminder took home each award, claiming MVP honours in 2016 and the Jim Bishop Award in 2017.

Brampton finished the round-robin with a perfect 3-0 record, which included a 12-9 win over Coquitlam, to earn a bye directly into the best-of-five championship series. The Adanacs were forced to play an additional game to claim their spot, earning an 11-5 victory over the Okotoks Raiders in the semi-finals to advance.

While Brampton was the class of the tournament throughout the round-robin stage, Coquitlam took their game to another level when the trophy was on the line.

The Adanacs kicked off the best-of-five series with an 11-9 victory. They scored four unanswered goals to open the third period, giving them their first lead of the game and one they would not relinquish. Coquitlam took a commanding 2-0 series lead thanks to a narrow 8-6 win in the series’ second game. Del Bianco turned aside 45 shots to hold the Excelsiors off the scoreboard in the first period, forcing them to play from behind for the remainder of the game. Dennon Armstrong (2g, 3a) and William Clayton (3g, 1a) paced the Adanacs’ offense, while Petterson (1g, 4a), Teat (3g, 1a) and Jake Boudreau (2g, 2a) did the same for the Excelsiors in a losing effort.

Steven Orleman made 46 saves to help Brampton earn a 12-8 victory in the third game of the series and stave off elimination. Justin Sykes (3g, 3a), Seth Van Schepen (2g, 2a) and Petterson (2g, 4a) were the most common names on the Excelsiors’ side of the scoresheet, while Colin Munro (4g, 1a) led Coquitlam with five points.

Coquitlam ended Brampton’s national championship run with a 10-8 overtime victory in the fourth game of the series, earning them their first Minto Cup title since 2016. Jake Boudreau of the Excelsiors scored at the 13:02 mark of the third period to tie the game and force overtime, but his team was officially eliminated from the tournament thanks to overtime markers from William Clayton and Ethan Ticehurst. Clayton (3g, 4a) and Dylan Foulds (0g, 5a) led the Coquitlam offence, while Petterson (2g, 4a) was once again the top scorer for Brampton.

Petterson was the tournament’s leading scorer with 43 points on 13 goals and 30 assists, while teammate Jeff Teat finished only one point behind with 22 goals and 20 assists. Chase Scanlan was the Adanacs leading point getter with 14 goals and 16 assists for 30 points.
