RCA NextGen rower Grace VandenBroek nominated to represent Canada at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games
Rowing Canada Aviron -Rowing Canada Aviron, in partnership with the Canadian Olympic Committee, have nominated rower Grace VandenBroek to Team Canada for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games. The rowing competition will be held in Buenos Aires from October 7-11, 2018.
VandenBroek, of Douro Dummer On., was nominated based on her time-trial result at the 2018 Speed Orders National Selection Regatta in June and will compete in the women’s single sculls.
Grace placed 5th in the women’s quadruple sculls at the 2018 World Rowing Under-23 Championships and placed 8th at the World Rowing Junior Championships in Racice, Czech Republic. In 2017, Grace won bronze in the women’s double sculls at the World Rowing Junior Championships.
“I am thrilled and honoured to be able to represent Canada at the Youth Olympic Games in Argentina,” said VandenBroek. “This is an amazing opportunity to compete with the best young rowers in the world and to make new connections with people right around the globe. I will wear our Canadian flag with pride.”
RCA NextGen Hub coach lead, Carol Love will be coaching Grace in Puerto Madero in the heart of Buenos Aires.
“Grace was introduced to rowing through Rowing Canada Aviron’s talent search in local high schools,” said Love. “Her progression from her first strokes at the Peterborough Rowing Club to several international starts has fed her passion for the sport. Being selected to participate in the Youth Olympics will be a significant benchmark for Grace in her development.”
The Youth Olympic Games are an elite sporting event for young people all over the world. The sports programme is based on that of the Olympic Games, with 28 sports featured on the summer programme.
The rowing events include men’s and women’s single sculls and pairs. The course will have 4 lanes with a race distance is 500m. For more information on the rowing event, click here.
