Manitoba Badminton Association – High Quality Matches at Provincial Championships
Thien Vo Takes Singles & Doubles

Winnipeg, April 30 2017 – Spectators were treated to the most competitive Provincial Championships in recent memory at the Winnipeg Winter Club from April 27 – 30, 2017.  Thien Vo (WWC) took 2 Gold medals, while the rest of the winners were shared by former Olympian Anil Kaul (WWC), Dale Kinley (Interlake), Katherine Lee (UofM), Kristin Szuminsky (Not Affiliated), Hanna Rebizant (WWC), and Tiffany Tantakoun (WWC).

In a hard fought, 2 game set, Thien Vo overcame his club mate Kyle Grymonpre in the Men’s Singles Final, 21-18 21-13.  Though the scores don’t seem that dramatic, the rallies were long and the quality of play was as high as Manitoba has produced in the recent past.  Thien Vo, a runner up for Men’s Singles at 2 National tournaments this past season and recent recipient of his Permanent Residence card, will be competing for Canada in the Canadian Open in July in Calgary – Canada’s premier International tournament.  The Canadian Open is a Grand Prix level event in the Badminton World Federation’s (BWFs) calendar, and the second highest ranking tournament in North America behind USA’s US Open.

Thien Vo would pair up with 92′ and 96′ Olympian Anil Kaul in Men’s Doubles to repeat as Provincial Champions.  This year they beat out Winter Club coach Sean Chawla and his partner Kyle Grymonpre in the final 21-17 21-14.  This win is Anil Kaul’s 7th Provincial Championship in Men’s Doubles dating back to 1991.

On the women’s side of things, we saw a fresh young face win the Women’s Singles as Under 19 player Tiffany Tantakoun (WWC) defeated veteran Kristin Szuminsky in 3 games, 18-21, 21-12, 21-17.  Both players battled through injuries – Tiffany with a rolled ankle mid-match, and Kristin with a nagging knee and shoulder injury.  This is Tiffany’s very first Provincial Championship in the Open Category.

Women’s Doubles saw some redemption for Kristin Szuminsky as she paired up with Hanna Rebizant (WWC) to narrowly defeat previous winners Clarissa Koh & Vanhphen Souvannarath in the final, 22-24, 21-11, 21-17.

Finally, the Team of Rural MB roots, Dale Kinley (Stonewall) and Katherine Lee (Brandon) defeated Kyle Grymonpre and Katherine Desautels, 17-21, 21-15, 21-17 to take the last championships of the day, Mixed Doubles.  Dale and Katherine lost the first match to two formed mixed champions, but were able to figure out their strategy before starting the second and third matches.  With a punishing combination of hard smashes and soft touch at the net they were able to bring home the Gold!

The Provincial Championships caps off Badminton Manitoba’s circuit events for the season.  Unless athletes choose to play at Junior Nationals in 2 weeks, or internationally through the summer (Thien Vo & Kyle Grymonpre), they will have to train through the summer in preparation for the first tournaments starting again in September.
