Swimming Canada​ – TORONTO – Two bronze medals in the boys’ and girls’ 4×100-m freestyle relays solidified Pointe-Claire Swim Club as the top club of the competition at the RBC Canadian Junior Championships at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre.

Age Group Coach Philip Garverick weighed on his team’s performance after the award ceremony.

“For us, it’s really about the process. To get to a point in the season where this result is possible is a testament to the kids’ work ethic, and how much work the families have put in, the coaches, and even the city of Pointe-Claire,” Garverick says. “We’re just really proud of the team and the family that we’ve been progressing with over the years, and this is just another positive result in the direction we want to go.”

Competing in the girls 15-17 200-m IM, Aela Janvier of Pointe-Claire Swim Club took an early lead in the race and never looked back, winning in 2:17.69. Tonight’s gold was Janvier’s third at the competition and sixth total.

“I knew I had to work hard on the first 100 because that’s the weakest part of my 200 IM so I tried to stay with Victoria Kwan who’s a really good flyer,” said Janvier. “I improved in the backstroke a lot this year so I felt like I could catch up to her and then for breaststroke and freestyle I just closed my eyes and tried to get to the wall first.”

Janvier was awarded the swimmer of the meet for the girls 17-18 age group.

“I was a little nervous going into the competition but after my first race and having all of my coaches and teammates cheering me on, it really pushed me to get best times and to have fun with it,” added the Pointe-Claire swimmer.

Owen Huang of the Markham Aquatic Club was victorious in the boys 14-16 200-m IM tonight, earning his fourth gold of the competition in 2:06.06. He was later awarded top male swimmer for the 14-16 age group.

“Over the past couple years that I’ve been to nationals, it’s never like this. I usually peak before it,” said Huang. “I’ve been giving it my all in my practices the last couple months and I think it really showed.”

In additional action, Frederik Kamminga of the Olympian Swim Club battled back with a strong breaststroke leg in the boys 17-18 200-m individual medley to win the gold medal in 2:04.91. William Marois of the Club Aquatique St-Eustache was second in 2:04.98.

Kamminga and Marois had a similar battle with different results on Thursday night in the 400-m IM where Marois claimed top spot. For Kamminga, the gold medal solidified a strong competition where he collected four total medals, two of them gold.

Marois was awarded top male swimmer of the 17-18 age group. Tonight’s silver medal was his fourth total medal to add to his three gold medals. He outperformed the competition in the 200-m backstroke, the 400-m IM and the 100-m backstroke.

In the girls 13-15 age group, Asia Minnes took home the swimmer of the meet honours off the strength of five gold medals and one silver medal.

The RBC Canadian Junior Championships pool portion of the competition has come to a close. The open water events will take place on Monday at Professor’s Lake in Brampton, Ont.
