Alpine Canada – Calgary, Alta. (December 3, 2017) – Trevor Philp (Calgary, Alta.), Denver University alumni, was right at home on the Beaver Creek snow today achieving a career personal-best in giant slalom. Starting with bib 37, Philp put down an incredible first run jumping into 12th spot. Philp carved through the steep pitches on the Birds of Prey track, mastering the snow conditions, to better his first run result by one, finishing the day in 11th-place. Philp has now met half of the Olympic nomination criteria to be named to the team.

“Today was a good day,” said Philp. “I’m excited about how I skied and executed my plan. I was so happy to have three Canadians in the second run. It really showed that Canada is here and skiing well. The new skis are fun to ski on but you still have to work hard. I’m really happy to get that GS done with a good result. I’m looking forward to heading over to Europe and see what else we can do!”

Four Canadians started the Sunday giant slalom at Beaver Creek and there was a big Canadian cheering squad that brought home the team into the finish. Erik Read (Calgary, Atla.) and Phil Brown (Toronto, Ont.) both put down great first runs to make the top 30 flip. Read came down in 20th-place and Brown squeaked into the flip in 28th-place. Both men were in full-gas mode on the second run, putting up green splits, until small errors chucked them out of the course, resulting in a DNF.

“I was pushing in the second run and had a few green lights but got caught inside,” said Read. “It’s an awesome day for the team with Trevor finishing with a top-11 and having three Canadians in the top-30. That is something we haven’t achieved in years. I feel really motivated heading into the rest of the season.”

Dustin Cook (Lac St-Marie, Que.) who trained in the Beaver Creek downhill runs and raced the super-G, DNF’d in the first run fighting fatigue and altitude after multiple days on snow.

The ladies’ ran a super-G today at Lake Louise where four Canadians pushed out of the gate. Valérie Grenier (Mont-Treblant, Que.) lead the team capturing her first top-30 result of the season. Grenier finished in 26th-place in the first ladies’ speed race of the season. She has now met qualifying criteria to be nominated to the Canadian Olympic team.

“I’m a bit disappointed with my skiing having a few mistakes today,” said Grenier. “I’m happy to be staying in the points and in the top 30. I’ll have to build from there. I’m really happy to be skiing at Lake Louise. It’s awesome to be skiing at home in Canada and have so many fans cheering for us.”

Mikaela Tommy (Wakefield, Que.) finished in 37th-place, narrowly missing out on the points. Stefanie Fleckenstein and Roni Remme both DNF’d today.
