Tennis Canada – The 28-year-old will retire after the Vancouver Challenger in August
 
Montreal, July 26, 2017 – Philip Bester announced Wednesday, at the Granby National Bank Challenger, that he is retiring from professional tennis.  
 
After winning the doubles title three times and reaching the singles final in 2015, Bester felt he had a special bond with the Granby Challenger and wanted to say a few words on court to the tournament’s fans who have been loyal to him throughout his career. 

“I’ve come to the end of my tennis journey and am closing the chapter in my competitive career. The game of tennis has given me a once in a lifetime opportunity, which I am extremely grateful for as it has shaped me into the person I am today through all my experiences,” Bester said. “I am at peace with this decision and excited to move forward and pursue the next challenges and opportunities in my life. I would like to thank my family for all the sacrifices and support they have made and given me throughout my career. A special thank you to my father Alek Bester, Rufus Nel and Jon Sorbo for being the coaches who made me into the player I am. Tennis Canada and the IMG Bollettieri Academy for all their support. And lastly to all the countless people who have stood by my side through thick and thin and believed in me not only as a player but also as a person with their support.”

The 28-year-old, who is currently ranked no. 456 in the world, reached a career-high of no. 225 in July of 2015. He won nine singles titles on the ITF Futures Circuit in his career and also represented Canada in Davis Cup.
 
“I vividly remember travelling with Philip playing junior events down in South America along his good friend Peter Polansky, making his run at Roland-Garros junior finals and jumping into the pro ranks soon after,” said Martin Laurendeau, Davis Cup captain. “It seems like it was not that long ago. In between those parameters are fond memories of a player who devoted himself to the game all the while as proud a Canadian as can be. We will miss him on and off the court.”

Bester’s final event will be his home tournament, the Odlum Brown Van Open in Vancouver from August 14-20.
