Swimming Canada – MONTREAL – In the long and short of it, Mackenzie Padington of Campbell River, B.C. was Canada’s top freestyler this weekend at the 2018 RBC Canadian Swimming Championships with three gold medals including Sunday’s win in the 100-m freestyle.

Padington clocked 55.77 seconds with Kyla Leibel of Red Deer, Alta., second in 55.95 and Aleksa Gold of Toronto third in 56.09.

This week, Paddington also won the 800-metre freestyle and 200-metre freestyle. She was also third in the 400 free.

“I’m so happy to end the competition on that note,’’ said Padington, who is headed to Swimming Canada’s High Performance Centre-Victoria this summer. ‘’My other races were actually slower than I hoped but tonight I’m really happy with that 100 free. Once I knew it was going to be a close race that really got me going.’’

Canadian record holder and world championship medallist Sydney Pickrem also collected her third gold with a victory in the 100-m breaststroke in 1:07.90. She also won the 200-m breaststroke and 200-m individual medley this week.

Pickrem’s time in that race was also deemed the Best Performance of the meet.

Other winners in women’s competition were Sophie Marois of Montreal in the 200-m butterfly in 2:14.95 and Victoria’s Island Swimming in the 4X100-m medley relay in 4:13.63.

Padington and Pickrem tied for first in the meet’s point aggregate followed by Avery Wiseman of Drayton Valley, Alta.

On the men’s side, Richard Funk of Edmonton capitalized on his experience to beat rising star Gabe Mastromatteo of Kenora, Ont., in the men’s 100-m breaststroke. Funk clocked 1:00.95 to 1:01.44 for Mastromatteo who set a national age group record in the prelims clocking 1:01.33.

‘’I took a longer break than usual after the world championships last year,’’ said Funk, a world championship medallist in the mixed relay last year. ‘’So this being my first competition of the year I’m pleasantly surprised with the time.’’

Other winners in men’s competition were Stephen Calkins of Calgary in the 100-m freestyle in 50.10, Montana Champagne of Ottawa in the 200-m butterfly in 2:00.48, Brodie Young of New Westminster, B.C., in the 800-m freestyle in 8:24.60 and Montreal’s Club CAMO in the 4X100-m medley relay in 3:46.88.

‘’I did what I wanted to do with my race strategy,’’ said Champagne. ‘’It’s a great way to start the season and I want to keep improving and make the national team this summer.’’

Javier Acevedo of Ajax, Ont., had the best performance of the meet with his win Saturday in the 100-m backstroke in 54.65.

Alexander Pratt of Calgary won the male point aggregate with Acevedo second and Owen Daly of Montreal third.

Para swimmer winners included Nicolas-Guy Turbide of Quebec City in the 100-m freestyle in 56.83 and Maxime Rousselle of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., in the men’s 100-m breaststroke in a Canadian record 1:10.68.

The Pointe-Claire Swim Club won the combined team championship banner with 1,165 points. CAMO was second at 1,122 and Neptune Natation third at 858.50.
