Rugby BC – Vancouver, BC – June 23, 2016: Regional rivalries reach their apex this weekend as the best youth rugby players in BC suit up for their respective regional fifteens (XVs) teams at the 2016 B2Gold Provincial Regional Championships. Representative sides from across the Fraser Valley, Vancouver, Thompson-Okanagan, Vancouver Island South and Vancouver Island North will clash at Burnaby Lake Rugby Club on Saturday and Sunday in a bid to be crowned Provincial Champions.

More than 30 regional teams, totalling over 600 rugby players, will compete in male and female divisions across Under-14 through Under-18 age categories. Led by volunteer coaches, the Teams will play several qualifying matches on Saturday, with semi-final and championship matches on Sunday. The B2Gold Provincial Regional Championship Final matches begin at 3:00pm with the Under-14 Boys’ Final. The last championship fixture on Sunday features the Under-16 Boys, and kicks off at 5:25pm.

“Each year we have a great turnout of supporters cheering on these players,” said Dean Murten, BC Rugby’s Performance Development Manager. “It’s really a great experience for all involved and it’s a chance for players to compete at a level above and beyond that of the club or high school competitions.”

“Many players first experience this tournament at the age of fourteen or fifteen and forge lasting friendships with teammates from other schools and rugby clubs,” said Murten. “One of the best aspects of our sport is its culture of camaraderie and mutual respect, no matter the outcome on the field, and being being part of a representative team creates the kind of lasting memories that stay with athletes throughout their athletic careers and beyond.”
