Gymnastics Canada – RIO DE JANEIRO, BRA (April 18, 2016) – Isabela Onyshko of Brandon, MB and Scott Morgan of Vancouver, BC fell just shy of the podium Monday during the apparatus finals at the Aquece Test Event in Rio de Janeiro collecting three-fourth place finishes between the two of them.

Morgan started the night off in the vault finals, where his score of 14.450 put him just behind Igor Radivilov of the Ukraine who took the bronze medal with a score of 14.649. Oleg Verniaiev, also of the Ukraine, took the gold with a score of 15.333 while Jacob Dalton of the USA took silver with a score of 14.853.

Onyshko, who advanced to the finals of the floor exercise after the Romanian team withdrew, laid down a solid routine that scored 13.400, a score that both she, and her coach Joe Stouffer thought was low.

“I’m not happy with floor,” said Onyshko. “I felt like my routine was really good, it felt like it was better than yesterday, but the score — I don’t think it reflected that.”

Stouffer added: “I was happy with the improvements she made. I felt it was a stronger floor routine today and I just don’t think the judges score reflected the improvements she made.”

Taking the gold on the floor was hometown favourite Flavia Saraiva of Brazil with a score of 14.400. Silver went to Australian Larrissa Miller with a score of 13.700, while Leah Griesser of Germany took bronze with a score of 13.566.

In the beam finals, which saw only one out of the eight athletes fall, Onyshko was close once again to the podium, scoring 14.066, just behind Lieke Wevers of the Netherlands who scored 14.366. Lieke’s twin, Sanne Wevers, took the gold with a score of 14.800, while Saraiva of Brazil took the silver with a score of 14.733.

The artistic gymnastics portion of the Test Event is now complete. Next up for these athletes will be the 2016 Canadian Championships which take place in Edmonton from May 31 to June 4, followed by the final Olympic selection camp in Gatineau the last week of June.

Canada’s quest for berths at the Olympic Games will continue on Tuesday when Jason Burnett (Toronto, ON) will look to qualify in men’s trampoline, while Patricia Bezzoubenko (Toronto,ON) will be the last to compete on Thursday in rhythmic gymnastics.
