Triathlon Canada —Athletes to hold media availability at swim familiarization training, June 16, 4 p.m.—

OTTAWA—Canada’s top triathletes, including hometown girl Joanna Brown, and a group of Olympians and Paralympians will storm into the Nation’s Capital for the Ottawa International Triathlon, June 17-18. Brown, of Carp, Ont., along with all 12 of Canada’s National Team and National Development Team athletes, will be available to meet with media following their swim familiarization training at Dows Lake, June 16 from 4-5 p.m.

Brown, who is having her best season ever with two World Cup podiums already this spring, will be joined on the start line by Olympians Amelie Kretz (Blainville, Que.), and Tyler Mislawchuk (Oak Bluff, Man.), along with Matt Sharpe (Victoria), and Paralympic silver medallist, Stefan Daniel (Calgary), who will compete in the two-day able-bodied National Championships race.

This is the first time Triathlon Canada has brought all of its top athletes to the Canadian Championship, which will be an action-packed triathlon festival featuring seven races from the grassroots to elite level, including the  National Championships, Canadian Paratriathlon Championships and CAMTRI Sprint Premium American Cup.

An exciting new race format will headline Triathlon Canada’s inaugural National Championships for junior, under-23 and elite athletes hitting the start line for the CAMTRI Sprint Triathlon Premium American Cup. Modeled after the highly successful race format used at the Tiszaujvaros World Cup in Hungary, the Ottawa International Triathlon will start with super-sprint distance qualifying heats (300m swim; 8km bike; 1.5km run) on June 17, and will crown its winners the following day with the sprint distance finals that will feature a 750m swim, 20km bike, and 5km run. The top finishers in each heat automatically advance to the A Final. The remainder of the A Final start list is decided by fastest overall qualifying times. Athletes not qualifying for the A Final will race in the B Final.

The weekend will also feature five other events for athletes of all ages and abilities, from Kids of Steel to junior to sprint and Olympic-distance Age Group championships.
