Rugby Ontario – Senior Blues Women’s head coach Sonia Sennik recently announced the short-list roster of women that will be travelling to Truro, Nova Scotia representing the Ontario Blues while competing at the 2017 Canadian Rugby Championships in July.

Leading up to the 2017 Canadian Rugby Championships in Truro, Nova Scotia – Coach Sonia Sennik was faced with several difficult decisions regarding the stature of her Ontario Senior Women’s Blues team. Coach Sennik had the opportunity to work closely with several athletes prior to making changes to the long-list of Senior women. When asked about making those difficult decisions, Sennik made the following statement.

“We would like to extend our thanks to all athletes who participated in the pre-season talent ID and long list training sessions.”

When asked about the selection process, Sennik went on to express heightened levels of excitement when speaking on behalf of her Senior Women’s program.

“The Senior Blues staff is excited to work with this group of hard working and enthusiastic athletes. Our positive team culture will continue to fuel the disciplined execution of our attack and defensive strategies.”

The Ontario Senior Women have their eyes set on the gold medal after a second-place finish at the 2016 CRC Championships in Markham, Ontario. After finishing the 2016 CRC Championships with a 3-1 record, coach Sennik is bringing back 13 women from the 2016 squad that saw so much success last summer. Many of the core players from last year’s squad will likely be suiting up for Canada in their World Cup competition and are therefore unavailable for selection.

While returning players play a very important role on any team, new additions also play a very significant role in terms of creating an effective team dynamic. Sennik selected a total of five women from last years 2016 U20 Championship Women’s team in hopes of carrying over a strong work ethic and winning mentality. Making the transition from U20 rugby to the Senior level is a significant change in terms of speed, physicality, skill and phase play – however, Sennik believes these new additions will help the Senior program win this year.
