Canadian Sport Institute Ontario – TORONTO (August 25, 2016) – Canadian Sport Institute Ontario (CSIO) would like to congratulate the 131 athletes, 28 coaches and countless support staff from Ontario, as well as the entire Canadian Olympic Team, for an outstanding performance at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. The Canadian Team delivered powerful performances, captivating and inspiring the nation.

Team Canada eclipsed its goal of a Top 12 finish in the medal standings with a remarkable 4 Gold, 3 Silver, and 15 Bronze medals – a total of 22 medals for a 10th place finish in the overall medal standings.

The Games saw 30 Ontario athletes reach the podium a total of 35 times, contributing to 15 (4 Gold, 2 Silver, 9 Bronze) of the 22 medals won by Team Canada. That is a remarkable 68% of all medals won by Team Canada. All of Team Canada’s gold medals were won by Ontario athletes, with 75% of the nation’s gold medal haul coming from CSIO affiliated athletes.

Athletes who have received support from CSIO along their career development pathway, contributed to 13 of Canada’s 22 medals (3 Gold, 3 Silver, 7 Bronze); or 59% of all Team Canada medals. These medal winning performances came from 23 CSIO affiliated athletes.

2016 Olympic Medalists Affiliated With CSIO Included:

  • Penny Oleksiak: 4-Time Rio Olympic Medallist (1 Gold, 1 Silver, 2 Bronze). At 16 years old, this Toronto native set Canadian, Junior World, and Olympic Records. She was the first athlete born in the 21st Century to win an Olympic gold medal in any sport. It’s no surprise she was also Team Canada’s Closing Ceremony flag bearer.

  • Sandrine Mainville, Michelle Williams and Chantal van Landeghem: Each a Rio Olympic Bronze Medallist, train along with Penny at the High Performance Centre – Ontario at Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre and CSIO.

  • Kylie Masse: Trains at the University of Toronto, but does supplemental training with coach Ben Titley and the HPC-O at TPASC and CSIO.

  • Rosie MacLennan: Successfully defended her Olympic Gold Medal from London 2012 to become Trampoline’s first-ever back-to-back Olympic Gold Medallist. Rosie was also Team Canada’s Opening Ceremony flagbearer at the Rio Games.

  • Derek Drouin: Rio Olympic Gold Medallist in High Jump. Derek has trained and been supported by CSIO staff working at the Toronto Track and Field Centre at York University. The Bronze Medal winning Men’s 4x100m Relay team also received support from CSIO with the training group at the Toronto Track and Field Centre.

  • Lindsay Jennerich and Patricia Obee: Rio Olympic Silver Medallists in Rowing (Lightweight Women’s Double Sculls). Lindsay and Patricia are linked to Rowing Canada’s training group in London, ON, where CSIO has full-time staff embedded in the program.

  • Allison Beveridge, Laura Brown, Jasmin Glasesser, Kirsti Lay, and Georgia Simmerling: Bronze Medallists in Cycling Women’s Team Pursuit. The Women’s Team Pursuit is part of Cycling Canada’s training group at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre in Milton, ON where CSIO has a satellite facility and 5 full-time staff supporting the program.

The Rio 2016 Olympic Games saw countless Canadian athletes achieve personal bests and set Canadian Records. There were many Canadian Top 5 and Top 8 performances, full of athleticism, determination, and excellence, each one worthy of their own medal. This was a young Team Canada, with many first-time Olympians like Penny Oleksiak and Andre De Grasse showcasing their talents, athletes who will be around for many Games to come. The world-class legacy facilities of the 2015 Pan/Parapan Am Games such as Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre, Mattamy National Cycling Centre and the Toronto Track and Field Centre, have been a game changer for Canadian athletes and the Ontario sport system already, less than two years after their completion. The positive impact of these facilities will be felt for years and decades to come for athletes and coaches, and the support CSIO provides them as they prepare for future Olympic performances. As we begin the new quadrennial and look ahead to Tokyo 2020 and beyond, the future is full of promise.
