Sport Calgary – Olympic Heroes Visit Calgary School to Promote Good Sportsmanship

CALGARY, Alberta — On behalf of Sport Calgary, Catriona Le May Doan, three-time Olympic medalist in Speed Skating, and Duff Gibson, Olympic gold medalist in Skeleton and founder of Dark Horse Athletic, will be addressing students at St. Henry elementary school tomorrow about respect in sport.

The pair of Olympians will speak to the assembled youth about their own experiences in sport, what sport has meant in their lives, and what it means to truly be a good sport. They will address concerns about bullying, and demonstrate how teamwork and friendship can make sport into a source of joy.

“Sport can be an incredible tool to bring people together,” says Le May Doan, “but not if participants don’t understand the principles of sportsmanship and respect in sport. As a life-long advocate for amateur sport, I am passionate about the power of sport to effect positive change, and, along with my fellow Olympian Duff Gibson, I am excited to share that passion with the students at St. Henry.”

The visit from the Olympians is part of a new initiative at the school around playing fair, having fun, and building positive student relationships through sport.

The demographics of St. Henry, located in the community of Huntington Hills, includes many new Canadians, and students from low-income families. Earlier this year, Sport Calgary coordinated with a local service provider to outfit all students at St. Henry with ice skates.
