Athletics Nova Scotia – Saint John, New Brunswick- This past weekend, Nova Scotia was strongly represented by many great athletes at the Atlantic Track and Field Championships. This weekend served as a preparation event for the Provincial Legion Team who are preparing for Legion Youth Nationals in Sainte-Thérèse, Quebec on August 5-7. There were also many great performances by athletes not planning on competing at Legions.  

The Women of NS had a fantastic showing. One highlight is Sierra Sweeney of Halifast winning three different events and placing second in one event. On Saturday, she placed first in the midget 100m, the 80m hurdles and the 200m hurdles. On Sunday, she came back and placed second in the triple jump with a jump of 10.59m. Another highlight was Olivia Moller winning the midget 200m with a time of 27.18 and also placing second in the 100m. In the open 100m, Shannay Beals of Halifast won the race with a time of 12.02. Another highlight was Stephanie Manuel of Chebucto Athletics. She placed first in the junior 400m, first in the 800m and third in the 200m. Breanna Sandluck of Pictou achieved two gold, placing first in the youth 2000m steeplechase and first in the 1500m. Her sister, Allie Sandluck placed first in the midget 2000m and fifth in the 1200m. Paula James of Valley Athletics placed first in the masters 5000m with a time of 19:09.19. Zoe Carvery of Chebucto placed first in the youth 100m hurdles and second in the high jump. Teammate Olivia Hill placed first in the youth 400m hurdles, fourth in the 100m hurdles and eighth in the 100m sprint. In the midget high jump, Samantha Henneberry of Halifast won the event with a jump of 1.50m. In the youth high jump, Maddie Campbell of YHZ won with a jump of 1.63. Campbell also won the shot put and the discus throw. Lauren Quann of Pictou won the junior long jump with a jump of 5.21m. Quann also won the high jump and placed second in the 100m hurdles. Macayla Cullen of Pictou won the open high jump with a jump of 1.63m. Maria Duynisveld of Pugwash won the midget triple jump with a jump of 10.81m and also came in second in the long jump. Denver Fraser of Central Nova won the youth long jump with a jump of 5.31m and also came in third in triple jump. Rachel Holland of Chebucto placed second in the youth long jump with a jump of 5.27m and also placed third in the 100m hurdles and fourth in the triple jump. Deelle Hines of Pictou won the masters long jump with a jump of 3.99m. Gabrielle Fraser of Central Nova won the youth triple jump with a jump of 10.91m and came third in the long jump. Meagan Beamish of Halifast won the junior triple jump with a jump of 9.58m and came fourth in the long jump. Chelsea MacIsaac of Truro came first in the midget shot put with a throw of 11.09m and first in the discus with a throw of 26.78m. Jane warren was unstoppable this weekend winning the masters shot put, discus, hammer and javelin. Garin Purvis of Pictou won the midget hammer throw and came fourth in the discus throw. Tatum McLean of Pictou won the youth hammer with a throw of 51.70m and also came in second in shot put and second in discus. Gabby Smith of Pictou won the midget javelin with a throw of 28.72m and also came in eighth in the 100m and ninth in the long jump. In the youth javelin, there was a close finish between first place, Mira Alexander of Truro throwing 39.30m and second place, Heath Miller of Pictou throwing 39.17m. Miller also placed second in the hammer, fourth in the discus and fifth in the shot put. In the junior javelin, Lexie Trevors of Pictou came in first with a throw of 31.88m. In the youth heptathlon, Lorena Heubach came in first with a score of 3618. In the midget pentathlon, Emma Mattinson of Pugwash came in third with a score of 1593. All in all, the women had a fantastic showing on the track and in the field.

On the Men’s side, there were also many great highlights. Peter Collier of Chebucto won the junior 100m with a time of 11.05, he won the 200m and he won the long jump. Matthew Coolen of Halifast won the open 110m hurdles with a time of 14.98 and also placed second in the 100m. Joshua Lunda of Halifast was lightening winning the open 100m with a time of 10.65 and also winning the 200m with a time of 21.95. Ryan Shay of Valley Athletics was on fire winning the 100m, 200m and 1500m wheelchair races. Broden Decoff of Pictou won the midget 300m with a time of 38.86, he also came in third in the 100m and third in the 200m. Hudson Grimshaw-Surette of Southwest Nova won the junior 800m with a time of 1:57.28, he also placed second in the 400m. David MacLennan of Pictou won the masters 800m with a time of 2:16.66, he also won the 5000m and placed second in the 1500m. Andrew Peverill of Chebucto won the youth 1500m with a time of 4:01.89. Raymond Simpson of Pictou was tearing up the track, he won the youth 3000m with a time of 9:28.67, he also won the 2000m steeplechase and placed fourth in the 1500m. Scott Langille of Pictou won the junior 3000m with a time of 11:11.73, he also won the 10km, placed fifth in the 800m and placed fifth in the 1500m. Matthew Fraser of Pictou won the open 10km with a time of 43:08.12, he also placed fourth in the 1500m. Adam Farmer of Chebucto was busy this weekend winning the youth 110m hurdles with a time of 15.41, he won the pole vault, placed fourth in the discus, and placed fifth in the long jump. Owen Hebb of Chebucto won the junior 110m hurdles, placed second in the long jump and second in triple jump. Sacha Stover of YHZ won the midget 200m hurdles with a time of 26.89, he also placed second in the 100m hurdles. Raheem Elliott of Halifast won the youth triple jump with a jump of 11.92m and also placed third in the 100m. Brett Claveau-Corbin of Pictou won the youth high jump, placed second in the triple jump and third in the long jump. Kaelan Schmidt of Pictou won the junior high jump with a jump of 1.90m, he also won the triple jump with a jump of 13.20m. Devin Errington of Halifast won the open high jump with a jump of 1.85m. Jordan Bruce of Halifast won the open long jump with a jump of 6.70m, he also placed second in the triple jump. Stephen Belyea of Pugwash won the open triple jump with a jump of 13.06m, he also placed second in the long jump. Peter Lord won the masters triple jump and placed third in the 200m. Parker Swain of Pictou was on fire this weekend, he won the midget shot put with a throw of 13.48m, he also won the discus with a throw of 50.66m, placed second in hammer and second in javelin. Cameron Whynot of Bluenose won the youth shot put with a throw of 14.79m and also placed fifth in the discus. Thayne Hebb of Truro won the junior shot put with a throw of 13.18m, he also won the hammer and placed second in discus. Joshua Bell of Bluenose won the youth discus with a throw of 48.98 and also placed second in javelin. CJ Grant of Truro won the midget hammer with a throw of 44.82m, placed second in shot put and placed third in discus. Nathan Burris of Truro won the open hammer with a throw of 50.08m. Daniel Sampson of Truro won the midget javelin with a throw of 47.96m. Jake Temple of Pictou won the youth javelin with a throw of 54.59m, he also placed seventh in discus. Logan Coulet of Pictou was busy this weeked, he won the junior javelin with a throw of 39.19m, he also placed second in high jump, third in the 100m and third in triple jump. Rowland Evans of Truro won the masters javelin with a throw of 33.57m. A fantastic showing for the men of NS this weekend.

Nova Scotia was strongly represented by all of these athletes this passed weekend, as well as many more. The clubs of our province also battled, and in the end, Pictou County Athletics came out as the champions. Congratulations to all who participated this weekend.
