Nova Scotia Trails Federation – AUGUST 17, 2017 – Fun and games will be afoot on trails across Canada come August 26, as the country celebrates 100% connection of the Trans Canada Trail. While the Trans Canada Trail hosts the main celebration in Ottawa, almost 200 celebratory events will be hosted across Canada, including over 35 events to be held at sections of The Great Trail in Nova Scotia.

“Achieving 100 per cent connection of The Great Trail during the year of our country’s 150th birthday is a tremendous accomplishment, and was only made possible by the efforts of many truly remarkable volunteers, partners and donors,” says Blaise MacEachern, Chair of the NS Trans Canada Trail Committee. “This day is dedicated to the many individuals who worked tirelessly to create this national legacy.”

2017 marks a major milestone for the project, which was originally conceived in 1992. Twentyfive years and over 22,000 kilometres of trail later, the world’s longest recreational trail connects all 13 provinces and territories, and over 15,000 communities. Nova Scotia is home to 1,200 kilometres of The Great Trail, with 64 distinct sections, each cared for by individual trail groups. The trail links Halifax to New Brunswick, as well as Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador by ferry.

“August 26, 2017 also marks the start of a new chapter for us,” says MacEachern. “As we celebrate everything that has been accomplished in the past 25 years, we’re already looking forward to the continued growth and enhancement of The Great Trail in Nova Scotia.”

Individual volunteer trail groups will host each event at their respective section of The Great Trail. The events will vary from guided nature walks to live music, to cycle races and barbecues, or even all of the above. The webpage features a list of events happening in Nova Scotia, as well as an interactive map that allows users to zoom in to view events geographically.

Trans Canada Trail (TCT) is a not-for-profit organization created in 1992. TCT is working with donors, partners, governments, public and private landowners and volunteers to create The Great Trail of Canada – an epic trail of trails offering a wide range of activities. By the end of the year in 2017, The Great Trail will be the longest and grandest recreational trail in the world and will wind its way through a variety of landscapes – urban, rural and wilderness – along greenway, waterway and roadway. It will span 24,000 kilometres, link our three oceans and connect over 15,000 communities. www.thegreattrail.ca
