Canadian Lacrosse Association –   OTTAWA, ON (August 24, 2016) – The Orangeville Northmen came out on the winning end of a ‘Battle of Ontario’ in the finals of the 2016 Founders’ Cup, capturing the Canadian Junior ‘B’ lacrosse national championship with an 11-6 defeat of the Green Gaels.

 

It was a perfect ending for the host Northmen organization, who capped off an undefeated tournament by winning gold in front of their hometown fans at the Alder Street Arena.

 

“I couldn’t be more proud my team,” said Ryan Dowdall, general manager of the Orangeville Northmen. “Our players worked hard, played disciplined, and had the amazing opportunity to be coached by the best staff in Canada – Bruce Codd, Phillip Sanderson, Kyle Kallay, and Darren Halls.”

 

The championship game was tied 4-4 at the mid-way point of the second period when the Northmen began to pull away thanks in part to five unanswered goals in the latter half of the game, three of which came on the power play.

 

The loss in the finals was the only blemish on an otherwise successful week of competition for the Gaels, who easily steamrolled their competition on their way to the finals, before falling to their Ontario rivals.

 

The Northmen were propelled to victory thanks to a dominant power play (21/41, 51.22%), as well as a marvelous performance in net by goaltender Daniel Tanner, who finished the tournament with a 4-0 record and a 4.03 GGA. They were led on offence by Riley Thompson (14 G, 15 A) and Kyle Waters (10 G, 13 A).

 

“We will cherish winning the 2016 Founders’ Cup for the rest of our lives,” added Dowdall. “Doing so on our home floor in front of so many Northmen fans made it an even more amazing experience.”

 

The Seneca WarChiefs easily defeated the Calgary Chill by a score of 17-8 to capture the bronze medal. They were led to victory thanks to an eight point effort from Connor Fields, the tournaments leading scorer (11 G, 21 A).

 

The Tier 2 championship game was tightly contested, with the Coquitlam Adanacs getting the better of the Manitoba Blizzard, winning the back-and-forth affair 12-9. Lucas Sundar led the way for the Adanacs with seven assists, which three of his teammates each had a hat-trick.

 

 The three championship games on August 21 marked the end of a successful six day event, one that welcomed eight of the best Junior ‘B’ lacrosse teams from across the country.

 

“The organizing committee is proud of how the Orangeville community and lacrosse community stepped up to make this an outstanding tournament,” stated committee chair Nicole Power-Codd. “Thank you to the teams that competed, the volunteers that helped out, and the fans that attended for making the tournament a success.”
