Volleyball Canada – Max Burt has announced his retirement from the Men’s National Volleyball Team.

“It has been a tremendous honour to represent our country for the last nine years,” says Burt, who is from Gander, Newfoundland, and played for Dalhousie University. “Volleyball has created such incredible opportunities for me and allowed me to experience a life I used to dream of as a kid. I hope, like those before me, that I was able to inspire other Atlantic Canadians with small town dreams.”

Highlights of Burt’s National Team career included winning gold at the NORCECA championship in 2015 in Mexico, and competing in World League in Halifax earlier that year. “Those World League games were my first official matches with the A squad, and to get to do that so close to home in Halifax was incredibly special.”

Burt, a 6 ft 9 in middle blocker who also played professionally in Europe for several years, plans to spend more time with his young family, and begin training as an air traffic controller early next year. The 30-year-old also expects to begin coaching at a local high school in Gander, and to be involved with volleyball in Newfoundland moving forward.

“I thank all the coaches who I had the honour of working with over the years, including Glenn Hoag, Larry McKay, Stephane Antiga, Georges Laplante, Dan Ota (Dalhousie) and all my teammates who inspired and motivated to be a better player and person every day,” he said.

Burt also credits Deon Goulding, a member of the NL Sport Hall of Fame, with being an influence on his career in sport. “I would also like to specially thank my friend and mentor, Deon Goulding, a former national team member also from Newfoundland & Labrador. If it wasn’t for Deon’s guidance and teaching me the way at a young age, I would never have made it to this level in sport. He paved the way for kids like me to be able to even dream that this was possible.”
