Freestyle Canada – Seventh career win in Calgary for Mikaël Kingsbury, third-place finish for Justine Dufour-Lapointe

Calgary, January 6, 2018 – The Canadian moguls team started the year earlier than usual this Saturday in Calgary with the first 2018 World Cup before a large crowd that was receptive to the exciting show put on by Canada’s skiers. On both the men’s and women’s sides, four athletes made it into the 16-skier final. In the end, Mikaël Kingsbury emerged the big winner while Justine Dufour-Lapointe also stepped onto the podium with a third-place finish.

“This podium was important to me on my journey toward PyeongChang. It’s what I was visualizing, that one podium after another would take me to the Games. So this is a good one, it gives me confidence and I’m really happy with my result today,” said Dufour-Lapointe.

Her teammate Andi Naude finished fourth after leading the pack in the qualifying round and the first final.

Kingsbury still on top
This is the 11th consecutive win for the “King of Moguls” and his 46th World Cup victory. It’s also the seventh time that Kingsbury claims the title on Albertan soil – a title that escaped him only once, last year, when he finished second.

“The entire day was really exciting. Matt and Dmitriy had scores that I never thought I’d have to beat. They put a lot of pressure on me to do my best; and once again, I was able to achieve that with my run in the super final,” explained Kingsbury, clearly satisfied with his day on a course that has brought him more than his share of luck.  “I skied my first career World Cup here. It didn’t go all that well, but I’ve since learned a lot and won six events in a row, took second last year, and came looking for my seventh victory here today. It’s incredible!”

Also noteworthy is the impressive progress made by Brendan Kelly from the NextGen group, who made it to the final and took 11th place overall. He was very happy with his result: “This is the fourth time I’ve competed in this World Cup and I hadn’t had any success with my runs until today. So to do what I did here today was very exciting.”

The moguls skiers head next to Deer Valley for a double program on January 10 and 11. The venue is a favourite stop with the Canadian athletes, who enjoy its challenging course and the electrifying atmosphere.
