Canada Basketball – TORONTO, ON (April 4, 2018) – 62 athletes from across the country were invited to participate in the Men’s National Age-Group Assessment Camps this past weekend at Humber College North Campus (Toronto, ON).

“This weekend was one of the more difficult selection processes we’ve had to go through for our age group teams,” said Michael Meeks, Manager, Youth Player Development.  “The level of talent and growth we witnessed from Thanksgiving until now was impressive across the board.  I’d also like to extend thanks to all the coaches, staff and volunteers who helped make this camp possible.”

The objective of the camp was to provide a national training environment with international focus to top identified athletes born in 2000 and later. At the camp, national team coaches, sports scientists and technical staff worked to identify athletes who will be invited to the next stage of the 2018 age-group programs.

Athletes born 2000 or later were assessed for their participation in the U18 team, competing at the FIBA U18 Americas Championship in St. Catharines, Ont. from June 10-16. Last summer, the team earned a historic gold medal at the FIBA U19 World Cup 2017 in Cairo, Egypt.

Athletes born 2001 or later were assessed for participation on the U17 team, which will compete this summer at the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2018 in Rosario and Santa Fe, Argentina from June 30-July 8. Last summer, the team placed second at the FIBA U16 Americas Championship 2017, held in Formosa, Argentina.

Canada is currently ranked 3rd overall in the FIBA men’s age-group rankings.
