Event Cancellations and Tentative Outdoor Plans

It has been confirmed that the U20 and Senior National Championships for 2020 have been cancelled. The event page on the Athletics Canada website will continue to read postponed, however that is specifically in relation to the Olympic Team Trials component of the event.

The 2020 Tri Province event, set to be held in Brandon MB this July has been cancelled. This decision was made with input from both Sask Athletics and our Brandon hosts.

2020 Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships, scheduled for August 7-9, 2020 in Cape Breton, NS have also been cancelled.

These difficult decisions have been made based on the following considerations:

  • To protect the health and safety of the athletes and everyone involved in the Championships
  • To act responsibly in support of minimizing the spread of COVID-19 within our communities and our country
  • To respect implications from governments and public health authorities in regards to facility closures, gathering restrictions and physical distancing requirements, all of which impact an athlete’s ability to train and prepare for qualifying meets and Provincial Championships

At this time, the status of MB Games has not been announced.

As we move forward, Athletics MB will work with our member Clubs and Coaches, to develop an alternative competition calendar for July and August. We want to ensure that athletes have a certain numbers of training days prior to our first competitions. As a result, and since we have no way of predicting when we will be able to get back “on-track”, these will all remain tentative and will be subject to change based on changing conditions, as well as government and facility updates.

Virtual Training
Sport Manitoba has added Virtual Training to our Liability Insurance Coverage. However it must only be available to registered members!
i.e No LIVE STREAMING.

Also Coaches are required to include a disclaimer prior to any social media posts. Read the full post »
Accident Insurance Changes
Due to the current changes in our event calendar and our limited facility access, we have temporarily suspended our Accident Insurance Policy.

This is a SECONDARY insurance policy, and it will be reinstated prior to the resumption of any Athletics MB sanctioned competitions. Read the full post»

We would like to remind our members that Athletics Manitoba has taken the Responsible Coaching Movement Pledge. We want to make sport safer for children & coaches.

Rule of Two – For Virtual Coaching

The goal of the Rule of Two is to ensure all interactions and communications are open, observable, and justifiable. Its purpose is to protect participants (especially minors) and coaches in potentially vulnerable situations by ensuring more than one adult is present.

  • Ensure a coach is never alone and out of sight with a participant without another screened coach or screened adult (parent or volunteer) present.
  • Eliminate one-to-one electronic messaging. Ensure that all communications are sent to the group and/or include parents.
  • Allow training environments to be open to observation by parents.
  • Ensure an open and observable environment for all interactions between adults and participants.
  • Avoid private or one-on-one situations. Leave the office door open or have the conversation in a visible but removed part of the facility.

With even more of our communications moving online, we ask that all members work together to ensure that our new virtual training environments are as safe and transparent as possible.
