Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame -The 2018 Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony presented by Manitoba Liquor Marts is in two weeks – Saturday, November 3, 2018 at the Victoria Inn in Winnipeg.  This year we’re inducting seven individuals and one team who have earned their place in Manitoba’s sport history:

  • Kirby Cote – Swimming
  • Joe Daley – Hockey
  • Donna (McCannell) Keating – Speed Skating
  • Jeff Stoughton – Curling
  • Joey Vickery – Basketball
  • Don Brownell – Handball *posthumously
  • Nieva Embuldeniya – Boxing
  • The 1962 Manitoba Ladies Golf Team: Marg (Kiggins) Homenuik, Heather (Lawrence) Telfer, Anne Tachan, and Merlene (Wach) Netterfield

We’ve arranged for the following inductees to be available for in-person, in-studio, or over the phone interviews to speak about their incredible careers and the mark they’ve left in sport in this province prior to the event:

Donna (McCannell) Keating – Speed Skating

  • Available Wednesday mornings between 10:30 a.m. – Noon or Thursdays between 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
  • Seven-time national speed skating champion in juvenile, junior, intermediate and senior competition
  • Won bronze in the 3000m at the first Canada Winter Games in 1967
  • Competed for Canada at the 1972 Winter Olympics

Joe Daley – Hockey

  • Available between 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. for phone interviews
  • Played over 100 NHL games with Pittsburgh, Buffalo and Detroit
  • The All-Time WHA Leader in goalie games played (308), wins (167), and play-off wins (30), 
  • Three-time all-star 
  • Won the AVCO Cup three times in seven years 

Joey Vickery – Basketball

  • Resides out of province, but is flexible after Thursday, October 25 as he will be in Winnipeg
  • 3x CIAU national champion and MVP in 1989 for Brandon University
  • Competed for Canada twice at the World Student Games
  • Competed at the 1994 World Championships
  • Played pro in Europe
  • Member of the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame
  • Currently living in Austria and playing with the Mattersburg Rocks

Kirby Cote – Swimming

  • Available and interested. Please provide suggested dates and times for interview for her to confirm availability
  • Blind Paralympic swimmer
  • Competed and medalled in three Paralympic Games
  • Set two new world record times in 2000 in Sydney 
  • Won six gold medals at two World Championships
  • Named Manitoba Female Athlete of the Year in 2000
