Diving Canada – TORONTO – Caeli McKay of Calgary and Alexandre Corriveau of Terrebonne, Que., were the big winners on Friday to open the Summer Nationals diving competition.

On women’s three-metre, McKay earned 311.85 points with Mia Vallee of Beaconsfield, Que., second at 304.40 and Frederique Lalonde of Montreal third at 288.90

McKay was fourth in the morning preliminaries after she failed her forward dive.

‘’I just had to forget about everything that happened in the prelims,’’ said McKay 16, also the three-metre champion at last year’s summer nationals. ‘’My second dive is one that I’m comfortable with and I was glad I was able to come back and do it well in the final.’’

On men’s 10-m, the 15-year-old Corriveau scored a personal best 408.50 with Ethan Pitman of Edmonton second at 385.10 and Aidan Faminoff of Victoria third at 358.95.

‘’I couldn’t be happier with that performance,’’ said Corriveau, celebrating his first career senior crown. ‘’I’ve inserted one new dive for this season and it has helped bring my scores up.’’

This weekend’s competition was also the last in the Olympic selection but all the nominees have been pre-selected based on international performances in accordance with Diving Canada’s Olympic selection criteria.

This week’s Summer Nationals will crown Canadian champions, select the Olympic alternates, select the Canadian teams for the FINA Grand Prix events in Italy, Malaysia, and Australia later this season.
