Lieutenant Governor Lois E. Mitchell Supports Youth Literacy Program at Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame
Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame – Calgary, April 19, 2018 – This morning, students from Hawkwood Elementary School had the opportunity to engage in a youth literacy and sports awareness activity with the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, the Honourable Lois E. Mitchell. Her Honour talked about the importance of staying active in sports and answered questions from students and teachers.
“I’m a keen supporter of all programs that encourage young Albertans to strengthen their physical literacy. I’m excited to join students at Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame to share a story that will encourage them to develop these essential skills. Playing sports can help children to do better on all levels, from physical health, to academic performance, to mental and emotional well-being, and to teamwork and social skills. In short, sports are a great way to ensure that our young people grow into confident, resilient, healthy and engaged citizens for life.” – the Honourable Lois E. Mitchell, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta.
Three classes of Grade Fours learned about the value of participating in sport, the role of girls in sport and the importance of youth literacy. After the reading, they had a private tour of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame to learn about Canada’s sporting history and sport heroes.
