Laval, Sherbrooke to host cross country and swimming next season
Canadian Interuniversity Sport – OTTAWA (CIS) – Canadian Interuniversity Sport announced Wednesday its cross-country running and swimming championship hosts for the 2016-17 season.
For the fourth time in a decade and for the fifth time in history, the national cross country meet will be organized by Laval University, which has previously hosted the competition in Quebec City in 2011, 2008, 2006 and 1988. The top CIS mid-distance runners will battle it out on the historic Plains of Abraham on Saturday, Nov. 12.
“We are delighted to have the confidence of CIS to organize these championships once again,” said Gilles Lépine, assistant director of athletics and recreation at Laval and coordinator of the Rouge et Or varsity program. “The Plains of Abraham is an enchanting site for such an event, and we look forward to welcoming the best runners from across the country in November.”
In swimming, next year’s CIS championships will be held at Université de Sherbrooke, which previously hosted the three-day meet in 1998, 1990 and 1983. The exact dates for the 2017 edition – either Feb. 23-25 (Thursday-Saturday) or Feb. 24-26 (Friday-Sunday) – will be confirmed shortly.
“We’re very happy to host the swimming championships once again and I want to thank Canadian Interuniversity Sport for their confidence in our organizing committee,” said Jean-Pierre Boucher, general manager of athletics and recreation at Université de Sherbrooke. “In addition to the expertise of our staff, we will be able once again to rely on the know-how of the volunteers from Club de natation de Sherbrooke. The club will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2017 and is thrilled to add this prestigious competition to its program. We look forward to host the top university swimmers next February.”
The Guelph Gryphons have dominated CIS cross country over the past decade, claiming each of the past 11 women’s team banners and capturing nine straight men’s titles before settling for second place behind the Victoria Vikes last fall.
In the pool, the Toronto Varsity Blues are reigning national champions in both women’s and men’s competition after sweeping the CIS team trophies for the first time since 1993 in February.
