Gymnastics Canada – Montreal, April 22, 2018 (Sportcom) – Canada’s Jon Schwaiger (Dynamo Gymnastics) made an impression on Sunday at the Canada Cup in Montreal, winning gold medals in tumbling and double mini-trampoline.

In the double mini-trampoline event, the Ontarian received 73.100 points. He outperformed Callum Sundquist (70.500/Ortona Gymnastics Club) and Zachary Blakely (69.800/Thunder Country Trampoline).

“The competition went well. I improved one of my routines from yesterday and left the other as it was. I landed both. My total score was good,” noted Schwaiger.

With one successful final under his belt, Schwaiger moved on to the tumbling event, where he was crowned champion in the senior category with a total of 140.700 points. Michael Chaves (Rideau Gymnastics) took second place with 136.600 points while Callum Sundquist placed third with 126.300 points.

“My tumbling event also went very well. I made an error in the preliminary round and I needed one and a half points to move into first place, so I improved one of my lines and swapped another for a more consistent one. I’m very happy with the result” stated Schwaiger.

On the women’s side, Laurence Roux (68.000) climbed to the top of the podium in double mini-trampoline. The representative of Acrosport Barani had the highest score in the competition, beating Alexandra Forest (66.400/Phoenix Gymnastics Centre) and Danielle Grieve (65.800/Team Saskatchewan).

“It went very well. I worked hard on consistency in my sequences. I did what I had to do and I’m really happy,” exclaimed Roux.

Now that the Canada Cup is behind her, the Québécoise will head to the Pacific Rim Championships in Colombia. Her next objective is to increase the level of difficulty in her sequences.

In women’s tumbling, Zoe Hipel took top spot. The young representative of Dynamo Gymnastics finished the competition with a total of 121.800 points. Nora Bouraja (Gymnaska-Voltigeurs) earned 119.500 points for a second place finish while Catherine McNutt (Futures Gymnastics) was awarded 117.400 points for third place.

“I think today went much better than yesterday. It was my first Canada Cup so I felt a lot more comfortable and confident today, on day two,” Hipel admitted.

Canada Cup was hosted by Gymnastique Québec and Les Asymétriques club. The competition brought together 250 of the country’s top junior and senior National and High-Performance level gymnasts.
