Take Action for #AbuseFreeSport

On June 19th, Minister of Science and Minister of Sport and Persons With Disabilities Kirsty Duncan announced new measures for #AbuseFreeSport for national sport organizations.

CAAWS pledged its commitment to the Responsible Coaching Movement and encourages all sport organizations to do the same, ensuring all athletes and coaches are protected from abuse and harassment.

This past April, the Fédération de Ski acrobatique held their 6th annual ski camp aiming to address the social needs of girls and young women to help keep them active in the sport. The day was centered around the interests of the girls with a goal of fostering stronger social connection amongst the athletes and with role models–Olympic medalists Maxime, Chloé and Justine Dufour-Lapointe. The girls left the camp feeling inspired and committed to stay active in their sport.

A recent study by The Women’s Sport Foundation in the United States shows that students who play two or more sports between grades 8 and 12 are more likely to receive positive benefits from playing sport in terms of diet and nutrition, grades, and psychological well-being, but there is a clear gender gap: 

  • 75% of boys participate in sports, with 47% playing 2+ sports
  • 61% of girls who participate in sports, with 29% playing in 2+ sports

The Women’s Sport Foundation addresses this disparity and recommends girls getting more involved in the decision-making processes of playing sport and for sport organizations to adjust their culture, composition, and operations to be more accepting of girls’ participation.
