Equestrian Canada – Ottawa, ON, Jan. 26, 2018 – Equestrian Canada (EC) extends heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the late Monica “Nicky” Graham, who passed away peacefully on Jan. 11, 2018, at the age of 90.

Nicky married Pip Graham in London, GBR in 1953. Three years later, the young couple emigrated to Canada and bought a ranch in the foothills near Millarville, AB. Graham Ranches would grow to become not only home to their large, loving family, but also one of the most highly respected equestrian stables in Canada.

Nicky was fearless in her approach to equestrian sport, particularly eventing, and she taught, encouraged and mentored many young riders over the years. She was the driving force behind Graham Ranches and its role as the renowned training site for the Canadian Olympic Eventing Team. In addition to their unwavering support of high performance sport, Nicky and Pip always provided entertainment and sincere hospitality to all who visited Graham Ranches.

After the ranch was sold, Nicky and Pip moved to Hornby Island, BC and travelled extensively on their boat, “Lonely Bird”, up and down the west coast. They enjoyed many great adventures together until Pip’s passing in 2007.

Nicky will always be remembered for her incredible generosity, selflessness, humour and great sense of fun. When confronted with adversity, Nicky always said, “Bash on regardless.” May we all do the same, and continue to remember and celebrate her indomitable spirit.

“The equestrian world has lost not only a great supporter, but a great presence with Nicky Graham’s passing,” said Meg Krueger, President of EC. “Nicky’s dedication to eventing made Graham Ranches the top destination for everything from local shows to Olympic training. Her passion and initiative will be sorely missed by the Canadian equestrian community.”

Nicky is survived by her children, Juliet, Arifin, Nicholas and Tessa Graham, as well as grandchildren, Annie Bishop, Christopher and India Graham, and Hal Graham-Ozanne.

Services will be held in Victoria, BC at St. Matthias Church on Feb. 14, 2018 at 11 a.m, and in Horby Island, BC on Feb. 16, 2018 at 2 p.m. Donations in Nicky’s memory can be made to the Pacific Whale Foundation at www.pacificwhale.org.
