Freestyle Canada – Cassie Sharpe takes gold and wins her first Crystal Globe Noah Bowman takes top step on podium; Simon d’Artois wins bronze
Tignes, France, March 22, 2018 – The sixth and final stop of the 2017-2018 FIS World Cup season took place today in Tignes, France, where the sport’s top halfpipe skiers competed in the event that would determine the winners of the Crystal Globes. All hopes were pinned on Cassie Sharpe, the Comox, B.C. native and Olympic gold medalist, who had accrued 229 points prior to this last World Cup. To lay claim to the globe, Sharpe had to beat Brita Sigourney (USA). And she did it. Sharpe finished in first place with a score of 90.40, with France’s Marie Martinod coming in a close second (90.00) and Sigourney third (88.40).

Cassie Sharpe’s dream season
The 2017-2018 season was a memorable one for Sharpe. Along with an extraordinary performance that earned her a gold medal at the PyeongChang Games, she won three FIS World Cups, gold at the Dew Tour and a bronze medal at the Aspen X Games. Now she adds a Crystal Globe, a career first, to her remarkable record. “I am really excited about how the year went. Every contest was a new challenge in itself but I am so stoked to finish the year as the overall winner,” said Sharpe.

Sharpe had laid the groundwork for the final, which promised stiff competition, by winning the qualifying round on Wednesday against the same two opponents. She went into the final with a strong first run and took the lead – something she likes to do, since it gives her some breathing room for the rest of the contest. In the end, she won by a nose ahead of the skier who retires from competition today. “This contest was so much fun! It meant a lot to me because it was Marie’s last event and it was really fun feeling the energy of the crowd and the love for her. I have a lot of respect for her,” said Sharpe. “I am really happy with my skiing and am very motivated to continue to push myself to be the best that I can be!”

First Word Cup gold for Noah Bowman and third podium of the season for Simon d’Artois
What could be better than ending the season with a double Canadian podium for the men’s team? And what a finish for the Calgary, AB skier Noah Bowman as he takes home his first career gold at the FIS World Cup and finishes third in the FIS rankings. “So fired up and so stoked to get a win tonight in Tignes. It’s the first one of my career and it’s honestly such a surprise for me, as this week was a bit of a struggle just pushing through the last event of the season. So I couldn’t be happier!” said Bowman, who enjoyed a strong start to the season by taking second place at Copper Mountain last December. His teammate, Simon d’Artois, also made the podium – which he had, coincidentally, shared with Bowman at Copper Mountain. This brings his total to three wins for the 2017-2018 season, including one in Cardrona at the start of the season. “It was a really good night, I am really stoked with how I skied. I have been working towards a new run and I was able to put it down so I am happy about that. It’s been a beautiful week here in Tignes and I couldn’t be happier with my third place. It’s a great way to finish off the season and I am now looking forward to some down time and summer!” said the Whistler, B.C. resident, who finished fourth in the FIS overall rankings.

This competition wraps up the season for the halfpipe skiers, who now head home for a few weeks of rest before resuming training.
