Volleyball Canada – Xiamen, China, April 22, 2018 – Canada’s Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes won gold at the 2018 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Xiamen Open defeating USA’s Brittany Hochevar and Kelly Claes, 2-0 (21-19, 21-14) on Sunday.

Pavan (Kitchener, ON) and Humana-Paredes (Toronto) entered Xiamen right from their victorious run at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. Claes and Hochevar had an impressive debut at Xiamen in their first tournament together, and entered the final after battling all the way from the qualification tournament at this event.

“We are beyond proud to stand atop the podium in back-to-back events,” said Humana-Paredes. “This week was all about heart and grit. We battled all week long and came back when we had every opportunity to fall. To be able to play at a high level consistently is what we strive to do, so we’re pleased to know we’re heading in the right direction.”

In the semifinal, Pavan and Humana-Paredes beat Eduarda (Duda) Santos Lisboa and Agatha Bednarczuk from Brazil. The two teams had played three times in the past, with Agatha and Duda winning twice, but this day it was Pavan and Humana-Parades who were unstoppable winning, 2-0 (21-19, 21-14).

“This is what we trained for, our goal for the season was to win more golds and this is one to add to our collection and we’re so happy,” Pavan told FIVB.com

The bronze-medal match saw Australia’s Mariafe Del Solar Artacho and Taliqua Clancy up against Agatha and Duda from Brazil. The Australians won this match.

Artacho Del Solar and Clancy entered Xiamen after picking up silver at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, and previously won the Sydney two-star and Qinzhou three-star at the end of 2017 while Agatha and Duda are currently ranked number six in the world and no strangers to the podium, winning silver at the Hamburg World Tour Finals in 2017.

The other Canadian female team (Heather Bansley and Brandie Wilkerson) entered in the main draw at Xiamen finished ranked 25th.

On the men’s side, Commonwealth Games silver medalists Sam Pedlow and Sam Schachter finished ranked ninth after losing to Poland in the playoffs.  Fellow Canadians Grant O’Gorman and Ben Saxton ended up 17th.
