Canoe Kayak Canada – Gold Medal and New World Best Time for Canadian Duo Vincent and Vincent-Lapointe at Canoe Sprint World Cup
SZEGED, HUNGARY (May 19, 2018) – Canadian Sprint paddlers Laurence Vincent-Lapointe (Québec) and Katie Vincent (Ontario) captured gold Saturday in the Women’s C2 500m event at the International Canoe Federation’s first World Cup of 2018. The Canadian duo posted a time of 1:53.513 seconds in an exciting battle with China who took silver with a close time of 1:54.958.
“We knew the Chinese crew would be strong,” explained Laurence Vincent-Lapointe during an interview with Canoe Kayak Canada. “They were ahead of us during the first half of the heat, so we knew the final would be hard, but we planned to focus on our finish. We know we can be strong at the end of a race and that’s what we did, it was amazing”.
Women’s Canoe events will be contested for the first time at the 2020 Olympic games, and this result indicates that Canada will be a contender for the Olympic gold medal in Tokyo.
Also in the final were teammates Nadya Crossman-Serb (Manitoba) and Hannah MacIntosh (Nova Scotia) who finished 8th in a time of 2:05.958 seconds in the new Olympic event.
Team Canada athletes qualified for a total eight finals on Saturday. Michelle Russell (Nova Scotia) finished 7th in the Women’s K1 500m, Craig Spence (Nova Scotia) placed 9 in the Men’s C1 1000m-event and paracanoe athlete Mathieu St-Pierre (Québec) finished 4th in the Men’s KL2 200m race.
Teammates Anna Roy-Cyr (Québec) and Rowan Hardy-Kavanagh (Ontario) placed 4th in the Women’s C2 200meter-event followed by Crossman-Serb and MacIntosh, and Ryan Cochrane (Nova Scotia) and Mark De Jonge (Nova Scotia) placed 5th in the Men’s K2 200m.
The action continues on Sunday for the last day of this first World Cup. Among the many races, both Canadian Women’s and Men’s K4 crews will try to qualify for the big final and Women’s canoe 2017 World Champion will battle through semi-finals to secure a spot for the finals.
