Freestyle Canada  – Vancouver, BC, February 10^th, 2017 – This week’s competition schedule holds a very important date, the one year mark from the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. Freestyle Canada‘s athletes will be competing in two events, which are critical to the Canadian Olympic Team selection process: The World Cup in Bokwang, Korea where moguls and aerials athletes are competing and the Quebec City World Cup for slopestyle athletes.
 
As the Freestyle Canada’s athletes embark on this historic week, it’s important to understand the Canadian Olympic Team selection process. Freestyle Canada’s High-Performance Department has evolved and adapted a selection process framework that has been used since the 2006 Winter Olympics. The selection period for the 2018 Internal Nomination Procedure, spans from December 2016 through to January 21^st, 2018. The 21^st of January is the official deadline to qualify for the Olympic Freestyle Team. Following this deadline, Freestyle Canada will announce the Olympic Team.
 
Freestyle Canada’s quota is guided by the IOC qualification system. For Freestyle Canada, the maximum quota is 30, which includes a maximum allocation of 16 spots per gender. Within these 30 quota spots, there is a maximum of 4 spots per gender, per discipline. Although it may seem that these spots have already been allotted to the Freestyle Canada Team, they still need to be earned throughout the 2016-17 and 2017-18 season.
 
Eligible athletes selected from these methods will be nominated to the Canadian Olympic Team, for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. Method A and Method B pertain to both Freestyle Canada and Alpine Canada. While Method C will be used to fill remaining quotas. It’s important to note that Method A and Method B have priority over athletes nominated in Method C.
 
Method A, the first method of nomination, includes the provisional nomination of up to 3 athletes per discipline to the Canadian Olympic Team. As an athlete, you must earn two podiums at the Canadian Winter Olympic Selection Grand Prix. One of your two podium performances must also be earned at either the 2017 Korea World Cup test event, Norway X Games (for slopestyle only) or the 2017 FIS World Championships. The athletes two best results will determine his ranking.
 
Method B, the second method, requires athletes to earn one podium and one top eight finish as a benchmark. Furthermore, eligible results from the athletes respective events will be ranked.
 
Method C, the third method, will be filled across all disciplines, based on the athletes three bests results.
