Speed Skating Canada – The ISU World Cup will be held December 1-3 at the Olympic Oval

Calgary, November 28, 2017 – Calgary’s Olympic Oval will host 283 long track speed skaters from around the world, December 1-3, for the third ISU World Cup stage of the season.

The athletes, representing 34 countries, will take part in the women’s 3000m, men’s 5000m and team sprint events on Friday, December 1, in front of close of 2000 kids as part of the Intact Insurance School of Speed event. On Saturday, the 1000m and team pursuit races are scheduled, as well as the mass start semifinals. The competition will end on Sunday, December 2, with the 500m, 1500m and mass start finals.

Racing will start at 12:30 pm (local time) on Friday and Sunday, and at 12 pm on Saturday.

Tickets are available through the www.oval.ucalgary.ca/worldcup website at a price of $15 for adults (age 18 and over), $5 for kids and teenagers (ages 6-17) and $30 for a family of four. A three-day pass is also available at a price of $15 (ages 6-17) or $30 (adults 18 and older), all prices not including GST and fees online and at the door.

The ISU World Cup will be broadcast on CBC on Saturday, December 2, from 4 pm to 5 pm (Eastern Time), and webcast live from Friday to Sunday on the CBC Sports (http://www.cbc.ca/sports) and Radio-Canada Sports (http://ici.radio-canada.ca/) websites.

Tribute to Cindy Klassen on Sunday, Dec. 3

Six-time Canadian Long Track Speed Skating Olympic medalist Cindy Klassen of Winnipeg will be immortalized at Calgary’s Olympic Oval Sunday, December 3, as a banner representing her will be unveiled.

The ceremony will feature a video of her career highlights as well as a speech by Klassen, who was inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame a few weeks ago. It will start at 1:43 pm.

The federal Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities and MP of Calgary-Centre, the Honourable Kent Hehr, will also be in attendance on Sunday.

Throughout her career, Klassen won a total of six Olympic medals in Long Track Speed Skating, including five in 2006.

A Canadian Team of 25 skaters

After winning 12 medals at the first two World Cup stages of the season, in the Netherlands and in Norway, Canada’s Long Track Speed Skating Team will be back competing at home with 25 skaters.

The Canadian team will notably be led by individual medalists from this season’s first two World Cups: Ted-Jan Bloemen of Calgary, Ivanie Blondin of Ottawa, Vincent De Haître of Cumberland, ON, Laurent Dubreuil of Lévis, QC, and Marsha Hudey of White City, SK.

In this Olympic year, Canadian skaters will compete against the best in the world as each country is looking to qualify as many quota spots per event possible for the PyeongChang Games. Athletes are also looking to achieve International Skating Union (ISU) time selection standards on the fastest ice in the world.
