October 20, 2016 – The PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games are fewer than 16 months away and Canada’s athletes already have their sights set on the top of the podium. CBC Sports is giving Canadians a 360-degree perspective on the athlete’s journey from Olympic hopeful to Olympic champion with the second season of Road To The Olympic Games, beginning Saturday, Oct. 22 at 4 p.m. ET (1 p.m. PT) on CBC.

 

“As Canada’s Olympic Network, we know how passionate Canadian viewers are about their Olympic athletes and we want to fuel that passion 365 days a year, not only during those two weeks every two years – Road to the Olympic Games does that,” said Greg Stremlaw, executive director, CBC Sports, and general manager and chef de mission for CBC/Radio-Canada’s coverage of PyeongChang 2018. “Canadians love to root for teams and athletes with compelling back stories and the TV show and our digital platforms provide that extra layer of coverage that takes our audiences beyond the field of play and into the lives of the athletes year-round.”

 

Scott Russell and Andi Petrillo return as co-hosts of the weekly TV program alongside an impressive team of play-by-play commentators and Olympic medallists and World Champions who will serve as analysts for their respective sports. The new season of Road To The Olympic Games begins with world-class competition from Skate America, the first event on the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating 2016 calendar. CBC Sports’ broadcast team for the event includes four-time World and Canadian Champion Kurt Browning and renowned coach and choreographer Carol Lane, each of whom will provide analysis. Petrillo will host and handle play-by-play duties, with CBC Sports’ Brenda Irving providing additional insight and rinkside reports. PJ Kwong returns as a member of CBC Sports’ figure skating coverage with digital and social media-based reports and recaps throughout the season. In addition, Olympic champion David Pelletier will join the broadcast team over the course of the season to provide additional analysis to CBC Sports’ coverage.

 

Coverage on television begins this weekend with the men’s short program and women’s free program on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET (1 p.m. PT) followed by the pairs and men’s free programs on Sunday at 2 p.m. (2:30 p.m. NT). Online, cbcsports.ca and the CBC Sports app will stream the short and free programs from each of the four disciplines, beginning Friday at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT) with the women’s short program followed by the pairs short program at 10 p.m. ET (7 p.m. PT). CBC’s upcoming broadcast and streaming schedules are available online at cbcsports.ca.

 

In addition to competition coverage, Road To The Olympic Games will include features on established Canadian stars including Patrick Chan, Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir and Megan Duhamel and Eric Radford. In the digital space, cbcsports.ca will also offer fans an inside look at budding Canadian star Nam Nguyen in a new video segment, as well as in-depth stories about the return of the veteran ice dance team of Virtue and Moir.

 

In addition to ISU Grand Prix figure skating, this season of Road To The Olympic Games will feature international competition including: the Grand Slam of Curling; FIS World Cup alpine and freestyle skiing and snowboarding; ISU World Cup speed skating; IBSF World Cup bobsleigh and skeleton; FIL World Cup luge; and additional figure skating competitions including the Four Continents Figure Skating Championships, ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships and the World Figure Skating Championships.

 

CBC’s team of expert analysts have competed at the highest levels of the sports featured throughout the season, including Olympic champions Catriona Le May Doan (speed skating), Kerrin Lee-Gartner (alpine skiing), former National Snowboard Team member Craig McMorris, Olympic bronze medallist Deidra Dionne (freestyle aerials) and many more. The full broadcast team will be announced later in the season and comprises an impressive list of Olympic and World Championship medallists.
