Golf Ontario – THORNHILL— The most anticipated championship on the Golf Ontario schedule, the Investors Group Ontario Men’s Amateur, kicked off on July 12 from the Thornhill Club. The event that draws a full field each year is a big stepping stone that has launched the careers of many current and former Canadian professionals.

While there is a lot of golf to be played, round one belonged to Mississauga’s Eric Flockhart who finished the round three-under (68) and holds a one-stroke lead. The 21-year-old Flockhart didn’t have the start he was looking for after a bogey on the opening hole. He would get things under control and knocked down three birdies on the front nine to sit two-under at the turn. He settled for a pair of bogeys on the back nine, but also carded another trio of birdies to finish the round three-under.

Behind Flockhart is a pair of players tied at two-under (69). Unionville’s Max Sear and Cayuga’s Charles Corner both hold a share of second place. For Sear, a York Downs Golf & Country Club member, his round was highlighted by an eagle on the 17^th hole, which helped him get to two-under for the round.

As for Corner, he found himself even through 14 holes. However, he went on to birdie the 15^th and 17^th to also finish at two-under. 

Following the top three are five players all tied in fourth at one-under (70). The list includes: London’s Jake Adams, Thornhill’s Ryan Tsang, 2008 Champion Woodbridge’s Dave Bunker, North York’s Charles Fitzsimmons and Kitchener’s Keaton Jones.  In addition, there are eight players all tied at even par.

In total, 155 players began the four-day, 72-hole tournament. After round two, the field will be cut to the lowest 60 scores, including ties. In addition to playing for the Gary Cowan Trophy, players are competing for a qualifying spot at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship, Aug. 8-11, at The Royal Ottawa Golf Club & Eagle Creek Golf Club in Ottawa-Gatineau. The top three finishers will also earn the right to represent Ontario in the team competition at the Canadian Amateur.

The Investors Group Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship was first played in 1923 at Lakeview Golf and Country Club, and has a rich history of former champions. Past winners include: 2003 Masters Champion Mike Weir (1990 & 1992), Gerry Kesselring (1949, 1951, 1952, 1953), professional players Jon Mills (2001), Corey Conners (2010), Albin Choi (2012), Chris Hemmerich (2014) and Gary Cowan, who holds the record for the most Ontario Amateur Championships with nine (1964, 1968, 1971, 1974, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1981 & 1984). This is the fourth time Thornhill has hosted the Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship.
