Gymnastics Canada  – GUIMARÃES, POR (June 17, 2018) – Team Canada’s senior artistic gymnasts gave it their all this weekend at the World Challenge Cup in Guimarães, Portugal, winning one gold, two silver, and two bronze medals.

Canadian pommel horse champion Thierry Pellerin of Lévis, QC dominated the pommel horse competition and won gold with a score of 14.350. Pellerin’s score was almost a point ahead of Zoltan Kallai of Hungary and Koki Maeda of Japan who both scored 13.500 and took home silver and bronze respectively.

“I was a little stressed during the qualifications and wasn’t able to focus only on my routine, during the finals I told myself to relax and that helped me get a higher execution score on my routine,” said Pellerin. “I really showed what I’m able to do, it’s going to help the judges recognize me and I’m making a name for myself.”

Isabela Onyshko of Brandon, MB and Laurie Denommée of Laval, QC both finished the competition with a silver and bronze medal after laying down solid performances in the beam and floor finals.

Onyshko scored 13.100 on floor to finish with the silver medal, while rounding out the podium in third place on beam with a score of 12.600. Denommée also scored 12.600 on beam, but had a higher execution score than Onyshko, putting her in second place. On floor, Denommée finished just behind Onyshko with a score of 13.000 to secure the bronze medal.

Zachary Clay of Chilliwack, BC finished fifth in the pommel horse final while René Cournoyer of Repentiguy, QC finished eighth on vault and high bar.
