Canadian Fencing Federation – Canadians took part in the November North American Cup in Milwaukee this past weekend and Canada had a number of top 8 and top 16 performances.

Jane Caulfield (EFC, Edmonton, AB) took home bronze in Cadet Women’s Foil, in a competition that featured over 200 fencers!  Ying Cao (TFC, Toronto, ON) finished in 9^th place in the same competition.

Three Canadians finished in the top 16 in Cadet Women’s Epee.  Evelyn Zhang (Vango, Toronto, ON) was 8^th, Natasha Kis-Toth (Dynamo, Richmond, BC) was 13^th and Ariane Leonard (Olympia, St. Lambert, QC) was 14^th out of 164 fencers.

Fynn Fafard (Dynamo, Roberts Creek, BC) made it to the quarter-finals in Cadet Men’s Epee, finishing 7^th overall in an event with 222 fencers. In Junior Women’s Sabre, Marina Guintchitskaia (SSC, Edmonton, AB) finished 8^th. Competition continues today.

Meanwhile Canada’s Senior Women’s Epee athletes were in action in Suzhou, China.  Two Canadians advanced to the 64’s.  Rio Olympian Leonora Mackinnon (Canadian living in England) had 5 wins and 1 loss in poules and advanced directly to the main draw where she lost to Poland’s Magdalena Piekark a very close 10-9 to finish 43^rd.  Malinka Hoppe-Montanaro (Montreal, QC) had 4 wins and 2 losses after poules and made the top 64 after defeating Yao Xing from China 15-11 in the direct elimination bout.  Hoppe-Montanaro lost her 64 bout to Russia’s Tatyana Andryus Hina 15-10 to finish 54^th overall.

The Canadian Women’s Epee Team (Leonora Mackinnon, Malinka Hoppe-Montanaro, Brittany Mark-Larkin and Vanessa Lacas-Warrick) came close to achieving a major breakthrough in the team competition.  Canada faced top 8 ranked France in the 16’s and lost a very close 43-41 after leading for the first half of the bout.  This put them in the classification rounds and Canada lost to Germany and then defeated Australia to advance to the 13-14 placing bout.  They faced USA and lost a close 33-26 to finish in 14^th place overall.

Maximilien Van Haaster (Montreal, QC) and Mikhail Sweet (Winnipeg, MB) were at the Tokyo Men’s Foil Senior World Cup and finished 75^th and 111^th respectively.
