World Triathlon Edmonton – Triathlon Canada chooses Edmonton for 2019 ITU Grand Final bid

MAY 5, 2016 (EDMONTON) – Triathlon Canada, the national governing body of triathlon, has selected Edmonton as the city to represent Canada in the bidding process for the 2019 ITU World Triathlon Series (WTS) Grand Final.  The City must now submit the bid to the International Triathlon Union (ITU) before May 16th.

“Edmonton has a long history of hosting quality international triathlon events,”says Les Pereira, President of Triathlon Canada, “The City of Edmonton presented a great package and I look forward to what happens next when the City and the Local Organizing Committee present the bid to the ITU.”

Sheila O’Kelly, president and general manager of WTS Edmonton, has been organizing triathlon events for nearly two decades, starting with a small community race and growing it to be a yearly stop on the prestigious ITU World Triathlon Series circuit. She attributes the success of the local organizing committee to the City of Edmonton. “There is a tremendous amount of support from the City and Edmonton Events to promote Sport Tourism and the sport of triathlon has benefited from this.” Sheila adds, “I understand Montreal put forth a strong bid as well so we are honoured to carry the torch forward for Canada.”

As the local organizing committee and the board of directors continue to plan the annual ITU World Triathlon Series event until 2019, Don Lowry, chair of the WTS Edmonton board of directors adds, “This is a great day for Edmonton and recognition of the competitiveness of our triathlon planning, hosting and execution capabilities. We remain focused on the ultimate goal of returning the 2019 ITU Grand Final to Edmonton.”

Mayor Don Iveson expressed the City’s satisfaction with the news. “As a sporting event host city that is already a stop on the ITU World Triathlon Series circuit, Edmonton has the proven know-how to organize international competitions like the 2019 ITU World Triathlon Series Grand Final,” said Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson. “We are honoured to be selected by Triathlon Canada to represent our nation in the bidding process. Given our track record, I am confident of Edmonton’s ability to welcome the world’s elite triathletes.”

Edmonton has hosted two pinnacle final races – a World Championship in 2001 and the Grand Final in 2014 for which it won the International Event of the Year at the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance Prestige Awards. The 2014 ITU Grand Final attracted athletes from more than 73 countries and was broadcast to a worldwide television audience of approximately 45 million in 160 countries, generating economic activity of more than 20 million dollars.
