Archery Canada – OTTAWA (Archery Canada) – Crispin Duenas of Scarborough, Ont., and Conner Sorley of Saskatoon tied for 17th place in men’s recurve at the Berlin 2018 Hyundai Archery World Cup (July 17-22) as the Canadian national team’s World Cup season came to an end in the capital of Germany.

Berlin was the fourth and final stop on the 2018 World Cup circuit, leading up to the Finals set for Sept. 29-30 in Samsun, Turkey. Unfortunately, no Canadians were able to earn a berth into the international schedule’s ultimate competition.

In Tuesday’s qualification round, Duenas, a three-time Olympian, was the top Canuck in a field of 137 participants as he placed 21st with a score of 656. Sorley finished 74th after shooting a 633, followed by Toronto’s Hamilton Nguyen in 85th position (629) and Brandon Xuereb, also of Toronto, in 103rd (616).

As the elimination rounds got under way on Wednesday, Duenas and Sorley both won their first two head-to-head duels, while Nguyen and Xuereb lost their opening matches by identical 0-6 scores against Jean-Charles Valladont of France (28th seed) and Patrick Huston of Great Britain (10th), respectively, to end up in a tie for 57th place in the overall standings.

Duenas reached the third round thanks to a 6-0 win over Poland’s Mateusz Ogrodowczyk (92nd) and a 7-3 decision against 2008 Olympic gold medallist Viktor Ruban of the Ukraine (69th), while Sorley defeated Pawel Marzec of Poland (39th) 6-2 and Ziga Ravnikar of Slovenia (87th) 6-4.

Thursday’s round of 32 proved fatal to both Canadians, however, as Duenas fell 2-6 to 12th-seeded Marcus D’Almeida of Brazil, the 2014 World Cup Final silver medallist, and Sorley dropped a 1-7 decision against seventh-seeded Mauro Nespoli of Italy, a former Olympic gold and silver medallist in team competition.

The men’s recurve individual final, scheduled for Sunday, will pit top-seeded Mete Gazoz of Turkey versus second-seeded Lee Woo Seok of South Korea.

Canada also participated in the men’s recurve team tournament in Berlin, finishing 17th in a field of 33. After taking 19th place in the qualification stage with a combined score of 1,918, the trio of Duenas, Sorley and Nguyen lost its opening ranking match by 0-6 against 14th-seeded China.

“It was nice to see Conner successful through two rounds. This is his best result to date at a World Cup,” said Canadian national recurve head coach Shawn Riggs, who accompanied the red and white contingent in Germany, along with Archery Canada high performance director Alan Brahmst. “We are continuing our work to refine both individual and team processes, and we again made progress at this event. Our primary focus now shifts to the Pan American Championships coming up in August in Medellin, Colombia. A strong showing there is critical to achieve spots at the Pan American Games and further down the road to the Tokyo Olympics.”
