Swimming Canada – ORLANDO, Florida- Dominique Bouchard of North Bay, Ont., a top contender to earn a berth on the Olympic team at next month’s trials, won the silver medal in the women’s 100-m backstroke on Friday at the Arena Pro Swim Series.

Olympic champion Missy Franklin of the U.S. took the gold in 59.80 seconds with Bouchard second in 1:00.70 and Etiene Medeiros of Brazil third in 1:01.43. Danielle Hanus of Newmarket, Ont., was sixth in 1:02.32.

Bouchard, 24, made huge strides on the international scene in 2015 with several strong international performances including a sixth place at the FINA World Championships in the 200-m backstroke.

Victoria Poon of Montreal took fifth in the 50-m freestyle and Ashley McGregor of Pointe-Claire, Que., was sixth in the 200-m breaststroke.

Savard wins bronze overseas

Meanwhile at the Marseilles Golden Tour in France, Katerine Savard of Pont-Rouge, Que., tied for third place in the 50-m butterfly in 26.27, her fastest time since setting her current Canadian record of 26.05 set in 2013.

World record holder Sarah Sjorstrom of Sweden took the gold in 25.18, Francesca Halsall of Britain was second in 25.60 and Melanie Hanique of France tied with Savard for the bronze.
