Baseball Canada – Jaden Griffin’s (Lower Sackville, NS) six shutout innings highlighted a 7-2 win for the Junior National Team over the DSL Astros to give the squad its first victory of the week.

In the afternoon contest, the juniors held the lead until the fifth before the Yankees pushed across two runs to tie and went ahead with two more in the sixth. They hung on for an 8-6 win.

The juniors are now 1-5 with six games remaining on the tour.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Edouard Julien (Québec, QC) ripped a two out single to right in the top of the first and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Noah Naylor (Mississauga, ON) then lined a pitch to right and Julien hustled around third to score the first run of the game.
-Two walks and an error brought in a run for the Junior National Team in the third. Rhys Cratty (Langley, BC) and Cooper Davis (Mississauga, ON) were issued free passes and Cratty moved to third when Adam Hall (London, ON) flew out to right. With two out Davis broke for second and the catcher’s throw sailed into centerfield that allowed Cratty to trot home.
-Infield singles from Michael Stovman (Maple Ridge, BC) and Dondrae Bremner (Toronto, ON) in between a walk to Archer Brookman (Montréal, QC) loaded the bases in the third and with two out Rhys Cratty drew a walk that brought in the third run of the ballgame.
-Julien reached via walk with one out in the eighth and came around to score after three wild pitches, advancing one base at a time.
-The juniors tacked on three insurance runs in the ninth with Michael Stovman leading off with a double to left before scoring on Archer Brookman’s single to right to get things started. Brookman then scored from third on a Victor Cerny groundout before Damiano Palmegiani (Surrey, BC) roped a single to right that cashed in Dondrae Bremner to close out the scoring for the Junior National Team.
-After two perfect innings, reliever William Undershute (Okotoks, AB) was touched up for a lead off walk followed by a single before a walk loaded the bases. A sac fly to centre ended the shutout bid before a single to left brought in another Astros run.

JNT HIGHLIGHTS

-Jaden Griffin was in control from the start and faced just 20 batters over six innings of work. Four of his six innings were perfect and he retired seven batters in a row on two separate occasions.
-Reliever William Undershute picked up right where Griffin left off as he retired the first six hitters he faced starting in the seventh.
-Michael Stovman’s 2-for-4 performance, that included a double, led the Junior National Team’s nine-hit attack.

Starting Pitcher: RHP Tate Dearing

HOW IT HAPPENED

-The juniors got things started in a big way in the top of the second as Edouard Julien (Québec, QC) belted a two run homer over the wall in right field.
-The Yankees pulled even in the home half of the third plating a pair of runs on a RBI double, while a wild pitch scored the other.
-Adam Hall (London, ON) got things going in the fourth with a hard single to left and Noah Naylor (Mississauga, ON) followed with a walk. On the first pitch of his at bat, Michael Stovman launched a ball to the gap in right that went for a ground rule double to score Hall and regain the lead. The hits kept on coming as Rhys Cratty lined an 0-1 pitch the opposite way to right to score Naylor, while Jason Willow (Victoria, BC) hit into a fielder’s choice that brought in Stovman.
-The Yankees kept coming and closed the gap to one with two runs in the fourth. With one out, starter Tate Dearing (White Rock, BC) gave up a double and then issued a wild pitch to put a runner on third with a sac fly to right bring in a run. A solo home run over the wall in right made it 5-4.
-The offence continued in the fifth as Cooper Davis (Mississauga, ON) tripled to the gap in left that saw Archer Brookman score all the way from first base and the Junior National Team regained their two run lead.
-Cade Smith (Abbotsford, BC) took over for Dearing in the fifth and allowed three straight singles combined with an error that led to a run. With runners on first and second and two out, a single to centre brought in a run to tie the score.
-The seesaw battle continued in the sixth as the Yankees took the lead with two more runs. Smith hit the first batter of the inning and issued a walk to the next before a single to centre brought one in. With one out, the Yankees executed a successful double steal with runners safe at second and home.

JNT HIGHLIGHTS

-Tate Dearing retired the first five batters he faced before allowing an infield single in the second. After a stolen base and throwing error on the same play put a runner on third, a walk put runners on the corners before Dearing got a fly out to centre to get out of the inning unharmed.
-Julien’s home run is the first of the week for the Junior National Team.
-Noah Naylor threw out a runner trying to steal second base to end the seventh inning.
-Cade Smith was touched up for four earned runs but he registered a game-high seven strikeouts over four innings of work.

Baseball Canada – BOCA CHICA, DR – The Junior National Team split a doubleheader today in two close contests as the Dominican Summer League Camp passed the halfway mark.

The morning game saw Jack DeCooman (North Vancouver, BC) strikeout ten, while Jordan Balazovic (Mississauga, ON) fired four shutout innings as the juniors beat the New York Mets Dominican squad, 2-1.

The afternoon match-up saw the Los Angeles Dodgers Dominican team break a 3-3 tie with two runs in the eighth as they went on to a 5-3 victory. Clayton Keyes (Calgary, AB) highlighted the offence with a solo home run in the second inning.

The Junior National Team’s record now sits at 5-4 with five games remaining on the trip.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-A lead off walk came around to score in the bottom of the first for the Mets after a stolen base and a two-out RBI single to left to put the home team up by one.
-The juniors mounted a comeback and took the lead with a pair of runs in the eighth. Clayton Keyes and Tyler Duncan (Sooke, BC) led off the frame with back-to-back singles before a fielder’s choice left runners on the corners with two out. Victor Cerny (Winnipeg, MB) then chopped a ball to the right side where the Mets second baseman threw wildly to first allowing Cerny to reach base and Keyes to score easily from third. Back-to-back walks followed to Luke Van Rycheghem (Kent Bridge, ON) and Terrell Rogers (Aldergrove, BC) and all of sudden the juniors held a 2-1 lead.

JNT HIGHLIGHTS

-JNT starter Jack DeCooman turned in a quality performance on the mound getting plenty of swings and misses from Mets hitters as he registered ten strikeouts over five innings of work.  After a walk and RBI single in the first, he scattered just three hits and walk the rest of the way.
-Reliever Jordan Balazovic (Mississauga, ON) was equally as effective as he tossed four shutout innings without allowing a hit and giving up just one walk. He struck out four.
-Noah Naylor (Mississauga, ON) and Clayton Keyes both paced the offence with 2-for-4 performances at the plate accounting for half the Junior National Team’s eight hits.
-Terrell Rogers singled in the third and his walk in the eighth with the bases loaded scored what turned out to be the game-winning run.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Clayton Keyes put the juniors out to an early 1-0 lead as he jumped all over a fastball and sent it well beyond the trees over the left field wall for a solo home run in the top of the second.
-The Dodgers got the run back in the home half of the inning as the used a walk and stolen, with an error on the throw, and another walk to put runners on the corners with one out before executing a double steal that brought the runner in from third.
-The Dodgers took the lead in the third as they used a walk and double to put runners on second and third before a sac-fly to centre brought in the runner from third.
-The seesaw affair continued in the fourth as Clayton Keyes drew a one out walk and used his speed to score all the way from first when Tyler Duncan doubled to right.
-Things got off to a rough start for reliever William Sierra (Montréal, QC) who took over for Turcotte in the sixth and gave up a lead off double before throwing two wild pitches that scored the tying run.
-With two out in the eighth, an infield single followed by a walk put two runners on for the Dodgers before a triple to centre brought both runners in to put the home team up 5-3.

JNT HIGHLIGHTS

-Sam Turcotte (Toronto, ON) kept the string of solid pitching performances going with five solid innings of work. He allowed just one earned run, two hits and three walks, while fanning five batters.
-Clayton Keyes joined the home run club, along with teammate Adam Hall (London, ON) who hit one yesterday, when he socked a fastball over the wall in left in the second inning.
-Noah Naylor had two singles and went 2-for-4 for the second consecutive game, while Cooper Davis collected a bunt single in the first and a single in the third.
-Tyler Duncan reached base in all four of his plate appearances. In addition to his RBI double in the fourth, he also walked twice and was hit by a pitch that scored a run with the bases loaded in the sixth.
