Diving – Victor Povzner earns Canada’s first medal at Dresden International diving competition
DRESDEN, Germany – Victor Povzner of Maple, Ont., won the bronze medal Friday on men’s one-metre in the 16-18 age group for Canada’s first podium appearance at the Dresden International diving competition.
Adrian Abadia of Spain took the gold with 491.35 points. Leonard Bastian of Germany was second at 470.45 and the 16-year-old Povzner third at 466.10.
‘’Victor increased the difficulty of his list in the final and really displayed his level of concentration and his strength,’’ said Canadian team coach Stéphane Lapointe, who added Povzner’s list had the highest level of difficulty of all 12 finalists.
‘’He executed new dives that he hasn’t been practicing that long and he did them super well.’’
In the boys 14-15 three-metre, Cedric Fofana of Quebec City was less than five points from a podium berth taking fourth spot at 418.50. The 14-year-old increased his point total by 50 points between the prelims and final.
‘’Cedric was much more aggressive in the final,’’ said Lapointe. ‘’It was great to see him come back in the final and show the amount of talent he has. He had a tough list for such a young diver and he amazed the crowd here.’’
Senri Ikuma of Japan was the winner at 451.30, Ben Cutmore of Britain was second at 425.35 and his compatriot Tyler Humphreys third at 423.40.
Canada has three entries at this age group event. Henry McKay of Ottawa is the other entry.
Competition runs through to Sunday. On Saturday Fofana competes on platform while Povzner and McKay join forces on three-metre synchro.
