Diving Canada – Miller and Legault tie for first place at 2018 Speedo Junior Development Nationals

TORONTO –  Kate Miller of Ottawa and Jordane Legault of Blainville, Que., tied for top in the girls 12-13 age group one-metre final on Friday to open the 2018 Speedo Junior Development Nationals diving competition.

Miller and Legault both scored 290.20 points. Keira Lu of Victoria was third at 281.80.

‘’It’s really cool to share first place with one of my friends,’’ said Miller. ‘’I wasn’t aware what the score was going into the last dive. I don’t like to look at the standings. What saved me today where my compulsories. I struggled more on the optionals.’’

Legault was pleased with her performance.

‘’I was happy with how consistent I was,’’ said Legault. ‘’I continuously received 7.0’s from the judges on all of my dives. So that means they were all very good but there was nothing extraordinary.’’

The Club Envol in Blainville swept the medals in the boys 12-13 platform. Matt Cullen took the title with 328.70, Benjamin Tessier was second at 316.35 and Jules Rolland third at 305.15.

‘’My backward dive was my best of the day,’’ said Cullen, who dove off the 7.5 metre platform. ‘’That’s what got me the victory. Also scoring well on my first compulsory gave me a lot of confidence.’’

Alexa Fung of London, Ont., was first in the girls 11 and under three-metre with 218.80. Sara Lupa of Gatineau, Que., was second at 211.60 and Presley Deck of Regina third at 206.05.

‘’Going into that last dive, I was worried,’’ said Fung. ‘’My previous dives had not gone as expected. I just wanted to do my best in the end.’’

In the boys 11 and under platform Arnaud Corbeil of Montreal took the gold with 221.00. Samuel Talbot of Brossard, Que., was second at 211.40 and Éméric Drainville-Lamothe of Brossard third at 209.60.

‘’I’m really pleased with my performance,’’ said Corbeil, who dove off the five-metre platform. ‘’What went really well are my compulsories but the optionals weren’t as good. Both my back and reverse dives were not as good as usual

Competition continues through to Sunday at the Pan Am Sports Centre.
