Gymnastics Canada – DOHA, QAT (March 24, 2017) – It was a difficult competition for Jackson Payne of Calgary, AB, who didn’t qualify for finals on any of his three apparatuses at the 10th FIG Artistic Gymnastics Individual Apparatus World Cup in Doha, Qatar.

Payne began the week with his pommel horse routine, where a series of mistakes left him in last place following qualification and no possibility for advancement to the final. “This was far from what I had ever expected,” said Payne at the end of competition. “I can’t really explain what happened because I’m still working that out for myself. My preparation had been the same or better for this competition than the University of Calgary International Cup last weekend.”

Following the pommel horse, Payne competed on the parallel bars as well as high bar and finished 17th and 27th respectively. The disappointment of not making the finals for his events at this World Cup is overshadowed by Payne’s determination to ensure he improves for future events and continues to aim for the podium.

“Competing for Canada is always a privilege, so I feel sorry when something like this happens. I know many people have their bad days or bad competitions, but I will most definitely use this as an indicator of what needs to be fixed for Canadian Championships coming in May,” said Payne. “My coach and I have plans to make the changes and improve my stability physically and mentally in the coming weeks and months.”

Payne will compete at the 2017 Canadian Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Montreal May 23 – 28, 2017.
