FLASH QUOTES

Note: Flash quotes to be updated as they become available.

Chantal VAN LANDEGHEM

On winning the bronze medal after narrowly missing the Canadian team before the 2012 Olympic Games:

“It means so much and it’s even more special getting to share it with four of your teammates. It’s everything I thought it would be and more. It’s a dream come true and I’m so proud to be a Canadian right now.”

On the team’s confidence level:

“We came here to play with the big dogs and we knew that if we put our best foot forward, we would be a contender to be on the podium, so we had that confidence going in.”

On the source of the team’s confidence:

“Just all the hard work we’ve been putting in, every single day, all year. We’ve been working for this moment. We’ve been bleeding, sweating, everything, so we knew we had put in the work and that was just time to let that show.”

On winning Canada’s first medal at Rio 2016:

“It’s surreal. We didn’t even know. We weren’t sure if it was Canada’s first medal or not, but I’m sure there’s going to be lots more to come. The whole team is looking amazing.”

On whether this will take the pressure off other Canadian athletes:

“I hope so. I hope people can draw on this and it will motivate them to do well in their respective events in sports.”

Penny OLEKSIAK

On winning a medal in her first Olympic Games final:

“It’s pretty surreal, but I think definitely all the girls that raced today deserve the medal. We’ve all trained so hard for this.”

On the bronze medal result:

“No one really expected this coming into the meet, but now that we’re here people are just going to be surprised at what we do.”

Michelle WILLIAMS

On winning bronze (WILLIAMS swam in the heats to qualify the Canada relay team but did not swim in the final):

“Penny’s (OLEKSIAK) last 25 (metres), I haven’t screamed that loud in my life. So many emotions just barreling through and then when she touched I just started crying when it hit me that I was a part of this too and I had won an Olympic medal.”

On Canada winning a medal in the event for the first time since bronze at Montreal 1976:

“It’s so exciting for Canada to have so much depth in the 100m freestyle and be able to compete against the best in the world and be able to embrace that whole race and really be in it the whole time. I can’t even think four years ago that this could even be possible. We’ve come such a long way.”

Taylor RUCK

On winning a medal in her first Olympic Games final:

“It was just amazing. I never felt this much emotion. I was totally overwhelmed and it’s just the best night of my life so far.”

On her objectives before the race:

“I was just looking to have fun and this morning I was pretty intent on my goal to get into the final and it paid off, so tonight was just about having fun and leaving it all in the pool.”

Eugenie BOUCHARD:

On STEPHENS’ game:

“I think she’s a really good player. I’ve known her since we were 12 years old, we shared the same coach for a while. She trained at the same academy with Nick (SAVIANO, USA). So I know her well and I think she can have a really big game. So I always thought since I was young that she would be really good.”

Jennifer KISH:

On the atmosphere playing against the tournament hosts:

“They almost drown you out, the crowd. We made a few mistakes as we couldn’t communicate because the crowd was drowning us out.”

On conceding no points in the opening two pool games against Japan and Brazil:

“Defence wins games. We have a lot of attacking threats but more so we pride ourselves on defence.”

On the conditions and recovery time:

“We had a staging camp in Toronto which was similar, if not hotter there. We try to train in the hottest conditions possible.”

On facing Great Britain in their final pool game on Sunday:

“It’s the first game of the day (for us) so you’ve got to come out with a bang. We’re going to look to dominate the contact area against them because we know, if you let them have any space, they’re going to punish you.”

Miah-Marie LANGLOIS:

On her team’s performance:

“We came out strong, we really hit the threes very well. We just have to tighten up our defensive rebounding. They got a lot of (offensive) boards.”

On the key to Canada’s success:

“Defence wins games and that’s part of Canada’s motto: hard work, pride, passion and that displays all on defence.”

On her pre-game rituals:

“I read. I have some coffee, and then listen to music.”

Kia NURSE:

On being the youngest player on the team:

It’s weird. I’ve been a baby rookie on this team for like four years straight now, so I’m kind of getting use to it.”

On the chemistry between Canada’s players:

“We’re in a really good place right now with the idea of taking it one game at a time. We play really well when we’re in desparation mode.”

Katherine PLOUFFE:

On playing on the same team with twin sister Michelle PLOUFFE:

“It was amazing. Just being able to play with the team and be my first (Olympic) Games, I was really honoured and at the (pre-game) anthem I was just taking it all in.”

On Canada’s next game against Serbia on Monday:

“They are an interesting team to play against, you don’t know really what to expect from them all time, but we know our offense confuses people and other teams can’t keep up with this.

“We know we can score, we just need to be on task with communicating on defence.”

Emily OVERHOLT:

On her first race at her first Olympic Games:

“(It was) very exciting, very nerve-racking. The time wasn’t amazing, but I’m really happy just to have a spot in the final. That’s the main goal for prelims. Really relieved, really happy to be in the final tonight and just excited to race. This was my main event, so having it on the first day was exciting. I’m just really happy it went OK.”

On the time that got her into the final:

“I wasn’t super nervous before the race, but as soon as I touched the wall and saw my time, I got so nervous, like sick to my stomach, because I didn’t think that this time was going to make it. I just squeezed in lane eight.”

On swimming alongside the event’s three-time world champion Katinka HOSSZU (HUN) and other world medallists:

“I learned a lot from them last summer. That was the first time I’ve ever raced all of them so coming to this meet I tried to think of myself as among them instead of below them. That’s the only way I’m going to be able to race them. I learned a lot from them, but now I just have to go and race them.”

Eric WOELFL:

On representing Canada in his first Olympic Games:

“Having the privilege to put the maple leaf on my oars at a major game is a one-of-a-kind experiencand really special to me.”

On competing in Rio de Janeiro at Lagoa Stadium:

“This is a beautiful venue. How often do you get to row in a place with mountains, sun and a fantastic crowd? What more could we ask for as competitors?”

Sergio PESSOA:

On losing his match and competing in Brazil, where he was born:

“I was expecting to have a good day today. Things didn’t work out the way I wanted. It was a special feeling to walk in and see my family, my friends all cheering for me. It’s very loud here, really good judo fans.”

On Brazilian judo:

“I have a bit of a Brazilian style. I was raised here and I started doing my judo here so I have a good style that’s similar to the Brazilians, but we always have to find a way to beat whoever is in front of you regardless of style, strengths and weaknesses. We have to find way and I didn’t.”

Jen KISH:

On the victory:

“We are building momentum. You have got to set the tone and we set it.”

Mike WOODS:

On tactics:

“We’re all in for the final. My goal is to see how I can stick with the best climbers in the world. I’m on good form right now, and climbing well. I’m going to have to have a really clean race if I want to be able to stick with the top guys but if I have that clean race I think I’ve got a shot at a top 10, maybe even sneak in somewhere on the podium, I don’t know.”

Carling ZEEMAN:

On approaching the race and her competitors:

“For me it’s important to focus on myself and stay within the boat. As soon as the draw comes out I acknowledge it, see who’s in my race, but after that it’s important to focus on me.”
