D’Angelo takes opening-round lead in Juvenile Boys’ Championship; McLaughlin tops Juvenile Girls’ leaderboard
Golf Ontario – CAMLACHIE — The 2017 Ontario Juvenile Boys’ and Girls’ Championships kicked off on Aug. 15 from Sawmill Creek Golf Resort in Camlachie. When the tournament began, 78 boys and 30 girls teed it up looking for the titles. At the end of the round it was Fonthill’s Freddy D’Angelo with the lead in the boys’ event, while Markham’s Hailey McLaughlin occupies top spot in the girls’ championship.
D’Angelo began the round strong with a pair of birdies on the first three holes and made the turn one-under. TheLookout Point Country Club member had a great back nine, which included an eagle on the par-five 14th. He finished the back nine at four-under and closed the round at five-under (66).
Second spot belongs to Courtice’s Ethan Cardwell. Cardwell, from the Oshawa Golf and Curling Club, shot a four-under (67). He was three-under and bogey-free on the front nine but battled the back nine finishing it one-under with four birdies and three bogeys.
Rounding out the top three is Ottawa’s Romi Dilawri at three-under (68). Dilawri was two-under on the front nine and began the back nine with an eagle on 10. He would give it back with a double bogey on 12, but still managed to finish the back nine at one-under.
Over in the girls’ championship, McLaughlin, from Cedar Brae Golf Club, ran into some early trouble with a double bogey on the second hole. However, she settled down and drained three birdies on the sixth, eighth and ninth holes to make the turn one-under. She found herself one-over after a pair of bogeys on the 10th and 14th but recovered with back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17 to end the day with the lead at one-under (70).
Sitting in a tie for second are Markham’s Victoria Zheng and Aurora’s Vanessa Chychrun who each shot an even par (71). Zheng, from Station Creek Golf Club, was even on the front with a pair of birdies and bogeys. After a bogey on 15, she birdied 16 getting herself back to even for the round.
As for Chychrun, a Beacon Hall Golf Club member, she was one-over after the front nine due to a bogey on the third. However, she recovered on the back nine with birdies on 15 and 17. That, combined with a bogey on 16, is what got her to even for the round.
The second round gets underway tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. and spectators are invited to Sawmill Creek to take in the action.
