Sport Nova Scotia – The international component of the Aileen Meagher International Track Classic on June 22nd at Husky Stadium in Halifax will be headlined by a 7-member team of elite competitors from Cuba.

Meet director Kevin Heisler indicates that all seven have met the Olympic standard and are expected to be on Cuba’s team in Rio.

Leading the team is emerging 100m sprint sensation Reynier Mena, Pan American junior champion. Mena’s 10.08 personal best in 2015 at age 19 indicates potential for a long career of sub-10 second performances, and that could start at the Meagher.

Joining Mena on the men’s side from Cuba are 200/400 sprinter Yoandys Lescay, and 110 hurdlers Johanis Portilla and Roger Iribarne.

The women’s contingent of the Cuban team features two world class 800m runners, Sahily Diago and Rose Mary Almanzo, both with personal bests under 1:58 that could put them in the Olympic final if they can repeat those times in Rio. Also entered is 100m sprinter Arialis Gandulla, a world junior finalist in that event.

Expect every member of the Cuban team to be among the medalists at the Aileen Meagher meet, and watch for them again in Rio.

Tickets for the June 22nd evening meet are available online at www.ticketatlantic.com, or by calling 902-451-1221. At $10 for adults, and only $5 for seniors and youths 16 and under, this elite international competition will provide an advance viewing of Rio right here at home in Halifax.
