Canadian Sport Institute Ontario – Yours to Discover: Team Canada and the Ontario Athletes  for the 2016 Olympic & Paralympic Games 

TORONTO (April 15, 2016) – Canadian Sport Institute Ontario (CSIO) would like to congratulate the 27 swimmers nominated to the Canadian Olympic Team and the 22 swimmers that meet the criteria to be nominated to the Canadian Paralympic Team for the 2016 Rio Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Of the 27 swimmers named to the Olympic Team, 14 are from and/or train in Ontario:

Five of the swimmers named to Team Canada train out of Swimming Canada’s High Performance Centre-Ontario (HPC-O) at Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre and the Canadian Sport Institute Ontario under Coach Ben Titley. These five athletes are:

  • Penny Oleksiak
  • Chantal Van Landeghem
  • Michelle Williams

15 year-old swimmer, Penny Oleksiak was a breakout star at the Olympic Trials, winning Female Swim of the Meet after setting a World Junior Record and Canadian Record in the 100 freestyle, and a Canadian Record in the 100 butterfly.

As part of the HPC-O, these athletes are able to access CSIO and its world-class facility as part of their daily training environment, receiving integrated support services from CSIO’s expert sport science and sport medicine practitioners including Biomechanics and Performance Analysis, Strength & Conditioning, Athletic Therapy, and Sport Nutrition. CSIO staff working with the swimmers includes Ryan Atkison, Lead, Biomechanics and Performance Analysis; Shawn Jeffers, Strength and Conditioning / Athletic Therapist; and Nicole Springle, Lead, Sport Nutrition.

19-time Paralympic medallist, Benoit Huot of Saint-Lambert, QC was also named to the Canadian Paralympic Team. Benoit moved to Toronto and trained with Ben Titley and the HPC-O for 9 months leading into the 2015 Parapan Am Games.

CSIO through its Ontario High Performance Sport Initiative, or OHPSI (NEXTGEN Ontario) program has supported many of the Ontario athletes nominated to the Canadian Olympic Team, either currently or during earlier stages of their career development pathway. These athletes include:

OHPSI (NEXTGEN Ontario) is a program designed by CSIO and funded by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport (MTCS), to provide sport science and sport medicine services to athletes who are best capable of achieving future international success on senior national teams in targeted winter and summer sports. The OHPSI (NEXTGEN Ontario) investment also contributes to funding athlete participation in training camps, international events, coach and technical leadership support and enhancing sports’ daily training environments.

Most recently, CSIO has provided assistance to swimming through coaching and technical leadership services to Ontario Swim Academy and its Head Coach Andi Manley, who is based out of the training facility at TPASC; and enhanced sport science and medicine support including Biomechanics, Physiotherapy and Strength and Conditioning. OHPSI (NEXTGEN Ontario) has also provided training and competition support to enhance race experience and international exposure including funding and leadership in hosting OHPSI training camps throughout the year at TPASC; hosting of the Ontario Junior International meet in December 2015 at TPASC; and sending 22 Ontario athletes to attend Pro Series meets in the United States.
